A’s Signing Shortstop Jacob Wilson to a Seven-Year Extension ...Middle East

With an enviable collection of young talent, and with a controversial move on deck to Las Vegas, I don’t blame the Athletics for going absolutely ham on extensions. It’s smart.

The latest is shortstop Jacob Wilson, fresh off a fantastic rookie season, who gets a seven-year deal:

The A’s core now under long-term contracts includes Jacob Wilson, Brent Rooker, Tyler Soderstrom and Lawrence Butler — and they’ve got Nick Kurtz, already one of the best hitters in baseball, under contract for another five years. An excellent position-player foundation in place.

Wilson, 23, is coming off a .311/.355/.444/121 wRC+ season with acceptable shortstop defense, and was worth 3.5 WAR. His skillset is mighty unique, as he’s a super-duper extreme contact guy, who nevertheless has just enough power to make it work. The flip side is that, as guys who do the “tons of chase, tons of weak contact” thing get a little older, they can fall off a cliff quickly. Not a bad idea for him to sign this deal, and, from the A’s perspective, they’ve tacked on some extra control if he takes some steps forward in the plate discipline/power department.

Speaking of which, Wilson was under team control for five more seasons, so this buys out two free agent years and possibly a third on the club option. Wilson is giving up a whole lot on that front, which is why he’s getting such a large guarantee despite a limited big league track record.

Obviously this is a deal that makes you think about Pete Crow-Armstrong, who isn’t exactly the same profile, and who is a little ahead on service time (he’s going to be a Super Two arb guy, Wilson was not), but who is also 23, also under control for five seasons, and also has a particularly unique skill set. I think if PCA were willing to sign this same deal, the Cubs would sprint to get it done. So maybe if they use it as a model, and top it off a little bit on the dollars?

Just thinking out loud.
