For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Junior Nationals qualifier Katelyn Borland has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Tampa beginning in the fall of 2027. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am so excited to announce my commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at The University of Tampa! Thank you to all my coaches, teammates, and family who have pushed me to get here. Also, a big thank you to the Tampa coaching staff for giving me this amazing opportunity. I can’t wait!!
A senior at Roswell High School in Roswell, Georgia, Borland has been a member of her school’s varsity swimming team since her freshman year. She also trains year-round with Chattahoochee Gold Swim Club, where she primarily specializes in distance freestyle.
The 2025-26 short course season was a breakthrough for Borland as she dropped over 13 seconds in the 1650 free, just under 10 seconds in the 1000 free, and almost exactly two seconds in both the 200 and 500 free. She set her current bests in the 200 (1:52.96) and 500 (4:57.95) at the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) 5A State Championships, where she placed fourth in the 200 and won bronze in the 500. A few weeks later, she posted personal bests of 10:03.86 in the 1000 and 17:00.20 in the 1650 at the GA ASL Southeastern Meet of Champions, winning both events and taking fourth in the 500 (4:59.38).
Beyond the short course pool, Borland qualified and competed at Summer Junior Nationals (LCM) in July, finishing 65th in the 1500 free (17:54.59), 78th in the 800 free (9:21.29), and 92nd in the 400 free (4:30.31). Her time in the 400 was a personal best, while her lifetime bests of 2:10.75 in the 200, 9:13.42 in the 800, and 17:44.32 in the 1500 date back to the 2024-25 season.

200 Freestyle: 1:52.96 500 Freestyle: 4:57.95 1000 Freestyle: 10:03.86 1650 Freestyle: 17:00.20The Tampa women won the 2026 Sunshine State Conference Championships and were runners-up at the 2026 NCAA Division II Championships. Borland’s current lifetime best in the 1650 free would have earned bronze at the 2026 SSCC Championships, while her bests in the 1000 free and 500 free would have placed fourth and fifth, and her 200 free would have made the ‘B’ final. Her current PBs in the three longest events are also under the NCAA Division II qualifying cutoffs of 4:58.33, 10:13.71, and 17:12.49, which puts her in position to qualify for Nationals as a freshman.
Borland joins fellow distance freestyler Mazie Moberly, who boasts similar best times of 1:56.08 in the 200 free, 4:57.81 in the 500 free and 16:55.96 in the 1650 free, and backstroke and IM specialist Abby Carnes in committing to the Spartans’ class of 2031 so far.
