Remote Learning Day 5 for Orange County Schools; 2-Hour Delay for CHCCS, Chatham County ...Middle East

News by : (chapelboro) -

Orange County Schools will hold its fifth and final available day of remote learning of the academic year on Friday, citing concerns for travel along bus routes and key roads drivers would use to get to school. Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and Chatham County Schools, meanwhile, will use a two-hour delay to alleviate those travel challenges.

Orange County Schools shared an alert at 4:33 p.m., confirming it would complete a full week of remote learning in the aftermath of Winter Storm Fern, which brought wintry mix over the weekend and saw freezing temperatures keep icy areas around. The district’s message said throughout the week, it has used “constant contact” with the state Department of Transportation, the National Weather Service, local law enforcement and emergency services to monitor conditions and make its calls.

“We appreciate their collaboration helping us make safety our highest priority,” it read. “Our Operations team has also continued clearing any hazardous spots on our campuses. However, many routes for buses and motorists remain unsafe for travel in Orange County this evening, and freezing temperatures will continue much of the day on Friday.”

Because North Carolina law allows public school districts to hold up to five remote learning days each academic year, it means Orange County Schools will likely need to make up days of instruction if there are any cancellations of class moving forward. The district must hold either 185 days or 1,025 total hours of instruction, each school year and Orange County Schools already cancelled classes for two days in early December out of concern over road conditions.

Like has been the case this week, Orange County Schools students can earn their remote learning attendance on Friday by completing their assigned work, which they can do asynchronously from instruction. Elementary students should be working through packets previously sent home with students, while middle and high schoolers will access their assignments through their take-home Chromebooks. Students will have at least five days after a return to in-person instruction to submit their work.

Chatham County Schools had remote learning on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week — but chose to cancel instruction entirely for Thursday. For Friday, the district cited roads in the community having “improved greatly over the course of the week” as a reason to return to in-person classes. But Chatham County also warned that drivers should use caution on roads and anyone should dress for cold temperatures while arriving a two-hour delay.

CHCCS similarly said the two-hour delay would give families and students time to safely arrive to the district’s campuses in daylight. School buses will arrive to routes two hours later than normal and the daily schedule across CHCCS is:

Elementary schools starting at 9:50 a.m. and dismissing at the usual time of 2:35 p.m. Middle schools starting at 10:25 a.m. and dismissing at the usual time of 3:20 p.m. High schools starting at 10:55 a.m. and dismissing at the usual time of 4 p.m.

All three districts’ choices come as central North Carolina is preparing for more winter weather over the weekend. The National Weather Service has both Orange and Chatham counties under a broader Winter Storm Watch that is in effect from Friday at 4 p.m. through Sunday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m., with the chance for snowfall appearing likely in the organization’s Thursday briefing.
