HENRIETTA, N.Y. — The town of Henrietta has been working to clear roads of snow and ice, but its road salt supply is running low.
Henrietta Superintendent of Highways Craig Barber said the town received only half of a recent salt shipment.
“They told me they didn’t know when they were going to get the other half here,” Barber said.
The town received a new shipment of salt Thursday morning, which was the first since last Friday.
“That’s a huge relief because I’ve had to cut back on the usage of our salt through that big storm,” the official said.
Last year, Henrietta and other towns faced similar issues with salt supply, leading to conservation measures. This winter, the problem is affecting other towns again.
“I talked to the highway superintendent up in Brighton, and he says that they’re having the same concerns we are,” Barber said. “They just can’t get salt.”
Henrietta’s street maintenance crews have been treating roads daily due to the nonstop winter conditions.
“So far this winter, we have not reached where we were last year,” Barber said. “Hopefully, keep our fingers crossed, we don’t get that low.”
Henrietta is on track to use around 7,000 tons of road salt for the second consecutive year, compared to about 6,000 tons in previous years.
A spokesperson for the city of Rochester said it has enough road salt for the winter, typically using 20,000 tons annually.
A spokesperson with the New York State Department of Transportation said Region 4, which includes Monroe, Ontario, Livingston, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming and Wayne Counties, is doing okay with its salt supply and continues to get deliveries from its suppliers.
