MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Kevin Doran, a familiar face to many as a former journalist in Rochester, is now anchoring at KSTP in Minneapolis. He spoke with News10NBC’s Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean about the atmosphere in the city amid recent ICE arrests, shootings, and protests.

Brean asked Doran to describe the current situation in Minneapolis. Doran explained, “Yesterday we got an email from our newsroom administrator asking everyone to return their gas masks so they could be cleaned and we could take inventory and to see if we needed to buy more.”

Brean: “Did you ever think in your career that you would have to learn to put on a gas mask?”

Kevin Doran, Anchor, KSTP Minneapolis: “No, but we’ve been trained and the goal is to get the gas mask on in 10 seconds.”

Doran shared that a photographer was hit by a rubber bullet and that both he and other reporters are trained on what to do if they’re arrested. Their families have access to mental health counseling and they have “go bags” with medical supplies ready, including saline to wash out eyes.

Doran said, “It really picked up when Renee Good was shot in South Minneapolis in her car. And that’s when it really went nuts.”

Doran says many families in Minneapolis are afraid to go to work, attend church or send their children to school. As a result, schools are employing remote learning and delivering free meals to students’ homes.

Tom Homan, the border czar who came to Rochester last spring after RPD officer got caught up in an ICE arrest, is currently in Minnesota meeting with the governor and mayors. Doran noted, “In my opinion he seems to be having personal conversations whereas before none of that was going on. There was zero communication.”

Despite the unpredictable nature of the situation, Doran remains hopeful. “It’s very unpredictable but I am hopeful that as long as no one else gets shot or hurt, that this will tone down,” he said.

Doran also mentioned the intense criticism he and his team are facing from all sides, which he believes is a testament to their fair and factual reporting.
