Alabama women’s basketball dominant on the glass, cruises past Alabama A&M ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Alabama women’s basketball saw its ups and downs on offense over the course of its 96-43 win over Alabama A&M, but the Crimson Tide controlled the boards on both sides of the ball to roll the Lady Bulldogs.

“This is what it’s going to look like in the SEC,” said Alabama head coach Pauline Love. “This is something we literally drill into them every day, and we talk about the physicality of this.”

Alabama got off to a hot start on the glass, with 15 points in the first quarter alone. Against only four for the Lady Bulldogs in that quarter, the Crimson Tide built a quick lead by closing out defensive possessions and getting second chances on its own misses.

Junior forward Mykelle Richards helped clean up some of Alabama’s errant shots early in the game. She contributed two second-chance buckets at the rim in the first quarter, one of which was off her own offensive rebound.

“We’re such a high-volume shooting team,” Love said. “The amount of shots that are going to come off the rim, the second chance points will be there.”

A putback by forward Kylie Torrence in transition at the tail end of the first quarter gave Alabama a commanding 22-5 lead less than ten minutes into the game. Alabama finished the first half with a 24-12 rebounding advantage over Alabama A&M.

That included 10 second-chance points off nine offensive rebounds, while the Lady Bulldogs managed only three second-chance points in the half. The extra looks were especially important in the second quarter, when Alabama cooled off for 40% shooting from the field and only reached the free throw line once.

Alabama regained its offensive rhythm after halftime, outscoring Alabama A&M 18-5 in the first five minutes of the second half. Rebounding still gave the Crimson Tide additional looks, and a putback by Amirah Anderson under the rim put Alabama up 45-24 as the lead began to grow.

Alabama doubled the Lady Bulldogs’ rebounds in that quarter, as Alabama A&M struggled to pick up second-chance points. The Crimson Tide’s success in closing out defensive possessions made it difficult for the Lady Bulldogs to recover from cold shooting stretches.

Torrence had the hot hand on offense for Alabama and finished with 18 points, but she was as dedicated to physicality on the glass as anyone for the Crimson Tide. Her eight rebounds were tied for the most on the team and included three on offense.

“It’s not hard at all,” she said. “We just have to come together as a team and get all our energy, like Coach [Love] said. It was about emptying our tank.”

Alabama finished the night outrebounding Alabama A&M 45 to 24. The Crimson Tide pulled away in the second-half, but its efforts on the boards early in the game prevented the Lady Bulldogs from capitalizing on cold shooting streaks.

“You have to represent Alabama,” Love said. “We’ve got to go out there and play hard and play with toughness.”

Alabama will take its first road trip of the season when it plays Tulane on Sunday. The game will tip off at noon CT and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
