ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The weather theme for the rest of the week will be bitterly cold air and frequent (but fairly light) lake effect snows. Tuesday night will see some Lake Ontario snow settling near the lakeshore. Accumulations should remain less than 1-2″ for most spots within a few miles of the lake, but northern Wayne County may see a few more inches of fluff by Wednesday morning. A wind shift on Wednesday will lift that band back out over Lake Ontario. At the same time, some light snow showers will drift northward from Lake Erie. This will bring some flurries and snow showers to our western counties, but with Lake Erie mostly frozen over, the impacts will be much less there.
We’ll get another clipper and another wind shift on Thursday. This will once again drop the Lake Ontario snow band back south and into the Rochester region. Another minor coating to an inch or so of lake fluff will accumulate, mainly in the northern counties Thursday. Wind chills will remain about 0° to -5° on Thursday, then begin to tank as our temperatures drop.
Friday will be our coldest day as another shot of arctic air arrives. Air temperatures near zero Friday morning, combined with a brisk wind will make it feel -10° to -20° at times, especially through lunchtime. This likely won’t be cold enough to close most schools, it is cold enough for frostbite if you aren’t dressed properly or stay outside for too long. Depending on the winds, a Yellow Alert may be hoisted as a “heads up” for the cold.
As far as the weekend coastal storm – at this point the track remains far enough away from us to keep any big impacts well to our east. But, it is still something we’ll monitor, as it is still 4-5 days away, and the track could shift.
