The Tribune’s Brad Biggs offering up Eric Studesville as “a name to keep an eye on” in the Chicago Bears search for a new running backs coach certainly caught my attention.
With the Kansas City Chiefs hiring Eric Bieniemy to be the team’s new offensive coordinator, Chicago Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson is on the hunt for a new running backs coach. Perhaps he could turn to someone he is familiar with from his early coaching days.
This tweet from Biggsy certainly caught my attention:
A name to keep an eye on for #Bears RB coaching position? Eric Studesville. Worked for the team from 1997-2000. More importantly, worked two seasons with Ben Johnson in Miami. Studesville has a wealth of experience and has always been well regarded.
— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) January 27, 2026Who is Eric Studesville and is he a fit for the Bears RBs coach opening?
Eric Studesville was most recently the Miami Dolphins running backs coach on Mike McDaniel’s staff. He has been with the Dolphins since 2017, with titles including run game coordinator (2017-20), co-offensive coordinator (2021), and associate head coach (2022-25). Considering how much the Bears head coach respects what McDaniel did as a run-game designer, I can understand why Studesville is someone who might make sense as Chicago’s next running backs coach. Plus, Johnson and Studesville worked together in Miami. I imagine that familiarity could be handy.

For some Bears fans, Eric Studesville’s name will sound familiar because they might recall that he was on staff in Chicago under Dave Wannstedt (1997-98, offensive quality control coach and offensive assistant) and Dick Jauron (1999-2000, wide receivers coach, assistant special teams coach). Studesville has ample experience as a running backs coach in the NFL, having coached in that capacity for the New York Giants (2001-03), Buffalo Bills (2004-09), and Denver Broncos (2010-16). And for good measure, Studesville has head coaching experience under his belt. It’s just four games (1-3 record) for the Broncos in 2010. But, hey, that’s still worth putting on the résumé.

I don’t have strong feelings on who should be the Bears’ next running backs coach. But whoever gets the job is someone I hope has plans to continue getting the most out of D’Andre Swift, Kyle Monangai, or whoever happens to be in Chicago’s backfield. Let’s face it, whoever gets the job has huge shoes to fill.
