Accumulating snow possible in Chicago area as major winter storm eyes swath of U.S. ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Accumulating snow is possible this weekend as a major winter storm eyes a large swath of the U.S., but what exactly the area will see remains uncertain.

The National Weather Service reported “accumulating snow is expected late Saturday into Sunday,” but the extent of the snow accumulations is not yet clear.

The best chance for higher totals sits near and east of Interstate 55, particularly areas south of I-80, which could see more than 4 inches in total.

“Several inches of fluffy snow will likely lead to hazardous travel conditions,” the NWS warned.

But there is expected to be a sharp cutoff line with the snow, which could mean that while some areas see accumulation, others see little to none.

Where exactly that line will hit remains to be seen. Some areas along the lakefront could see lake effect snow, which would also lead to higher totals.

The bulk of the snow is expected to fall between late Saturday evening and mid-day Sunday.

Forecasts could change in the lead-up to the snow’s arrival, with clearer details expected Saturday morning.

The snow is part of a system that has the potential to bring large scale power outages and dump more than a foot of snow in several states.

Millions of Americans from New Mexico to the Carolinas are bracing for a potentially catastrophic ice storm that could crush trees and power lines and knock out power for days, while Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City and Boston could see enough snow to make travel very difficult or nearly impossible, forecasters say.

“The set up is there for major travel disruptions, record snowfall and significant ice accumulations to knock out power… I don’t say this lightly,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said.

An estimated 100 million people were under some type of winter weather watch, warning or advisory on Wednesday ahead of the storm, the National Weather Service said.

The storm, expected to begin Friday and continue through the weekend, is also projected to bring heavy snow and all types of wintry precipitation, including freezing rain and sleet. An atmospheric river of moisture could be in place by the weekend, pulling precipitation across Texas and other states along the Gulf Coast and continuing across Georgia and the Carolinas before heading northeast, forecasters said.

It comes as the Chicago area experiences some of the coldest temperatures in years, with a cold weather advisory continuing through Saturday morning.

Saturday’s high temperature is forecast to be 10 degrees. Morning wind chills Saturday will still be bitter, with feels-like temps as low as -30.

From the cold to the snow to the ice, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes warned anyone in the winter storm’s path to take precautions.

“Stay safe, avoid travel if possible this weekend and have a plan in case of power outages,” he said.
