A Denver man was arrested in connection to a 2020 attempted murder, where he shot a man in the neck at the victim’s home.

Manuel Fuentes-Ramirez, 38, was arrested Sunday on charges of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and a crime of violence charge. It’s not clear where he was arrested.

Fuentes shot the victim in the neck in the victim’s home on May 2, 2020, according to the affidavit. The victim was able to knock the gun away from Fuentes before Fuentes left the home.

The victim went to a neighbor’s home for help, where police found the victim collapsed on the floor bleeding from his neck. The neighbor was placing pressure on the gunshot wound before he was taken to the hospital. The neighbor told police that Fuentes was the one who shot him.

The victim was shot in his front left throat area, where the bullet struck his jugular vein and exited out the back of his neck, police said.

Police spoke with the victim on May 7, 2020, where he said he is afraid Fuentes will come back and kill him or his family back in Nicaragua, where he is from, according to the affidavit. Fuentes was described as in support of the Nicaraguan government, while the victim is anti-government and in the U.S. seeking asylum in fear of political prosecution.

The victim said Fuentes had been at the house earlier the day of the shooting but left. About five minutes after he returned, he pulled out a pistol from his waistband, shot one round into a north-facing wall and said “Who wants to die?” according to the affidavit.

Then Fuentes pointed the pistol at the victim was standing directly in front of him, and shot him in the neck. Fuentes told the victim “he was not one of them.”

The victim said he had known Fuentes for about three months and they had seen each other at least 10 times, as Fuentes is related to the victim’s roommate so he was often in the same house.

Directly after the shooting, police spoke with a friend who was with the victim during the shooting. He said Fuentes came into the home without knocking and began to shoot at the victim, according to the affidavit. The friend was not shot, and went to look for help before police arrived.

As the friend was speaking with police, Fuentes called the friend to ask about his car, a 2013 red Ford sedan, that was parked in front of the friend’s house. Fuentes threatened him if he said anything to police and abruptly ended the call, according to the affidavit. The friend provided a photo of Fuentes to police.

When police searched Fuentes’ car, they found money transfers, a fake U.S. Permanent Resident Identification card and a fake social security number, according to the affidavit. Police were able to trace the car registration to an address in Denver.

Police collected evidence from the home, including swabs of blood and two spent 9mm casings.

Fuentes is currently in custody at the Weld County Jail on a $300,000 bail. He is set to appear at the Weld County Courthouse 8:30 a.m. Friday for an appearance on the arrest warrant.
