Bears Viewed as Possible Landing Spot For Boston College Offensive Coordinator Will Lawing ...Middle East

Ben Johnson’s coaching staff figures to see a shakeup this offseason. And after building a solid group of assistants as a first-year head coach, Johnson has set a high bar for whenever he has to pivot to some fresh faces. One name to keep an eye on is Will Lawing, who came up as a possible target when CBS Sports college football reporter Matt Zenitz mentioned the Chicago Bears as a possible destination for the departing Boston College offensive coordinator:

Boston College offensive coordinator Will Lawing is set to depart the program with the Chicago Bears as a potential landing spot for him, sources tell @CBSSports.Before BC, Lawing worked for teams like the New England Patriots, Houston Texans and Alabama. pic.twitter.com/DrNWNEekXb

Who is Will Lawing and is he a fit for Ben Johnson’s Bears coaching staff?

Will Lawing has spent the last two football seasons as the Boston College University offensive coordinator and tight ends coach. Lawing’s university online bio notes that he has been on a coaching staff with Boston College Eagles Head Coach Bill O’Brien for 10+ years. His time with O’Brien includes stops with the Houston Texans (2014-2020), the University of Alabama (2021-22), and New England Patriots (2023) before landing at Boston College. So, at a minimum, Lawing has ample coaching experience and some familiarity coaching in the pros. That could be valuable.

CBS Sports college football reporter Matt Zenitz does not mention a specific role for Lawing. However, it makes me wonder if there will be a change at tight ends coach. Jim Dray was one of the few holdovers from Matt Eberflus’ coaching staff. And it feels worth pointing out that Chicago’s tight ends room was a strength last season under his direction. Not only did we see rookie Colston Loveland get better with each passing week, but also Cole Kmet remained a steady presence. Plus, reserve tight end Durham Smythe also chipped in as a contributor.

We will continue monitoring this situation (and others) as the offseason rolls along. With the Bears expected to lose Eric Bieniemy to the Kansas City Chiefs, running backs coach might not be the only position Ben Johnson needs to fill this offseason. Stay tuned.
