Graduate years have officially returned to the NCAA bringing with them a rise of graduate transfers and early entrants to the transfer portal.
As a reminder, students who are looking to transfer under the “graduate transfer” label, meaning those who will have completed an undergraduate degree and are planning to enroll at the next institution as a graduate student, may enter the portal at any time prior to the portal officially opening.
Earlier this year, the NCAA approved the new age based eligibility policy, giving athletes the opportunity for five years of collegiate eligibility while taking away redshirt years and other exemptions. Since the start of the season, the transfer portal has seen an influx of athletes who will be graduating this year and are looking for a place to use their new 5th year of eligibility.
There are a number of swimmers currently in the portal, many of which come from Ivy League institutions, like Penn’s Peter Whittington who finished 23rd in the 200 breaststroke and 31st in the 400 IM at the 2026 NCAA Championships.
The Ivy League has historically not allowed 5th years, even generally restricting redshirt seasons. That seems to be the case moving forward for the conference as well with a number of athletes from a variety of Ivy League schools in the portal as graduate transfers right now.
Other Ivy League swimmers currently in the portal as graduate transfers include Stephanie Iannacone (Harvard) and Alexandra Bastone (Harvard) on the women’s side as well as Charlie Egeland (Yale) and David Schmitt (Harvard).
There are a few other swimmers who are were individual NCAA qualifiers. Michigan’s Hannah Bellard, Lexi Greenhawt, and Colin Geer are all in the portal as well, though they have a “do not contact” request on their profiles. As a reminder, athletes do not need to transfer when they enter the portal. Their scholarship can be taken away, but they can choose to stay at their program.
Duke’s Ali Pfaff is also in the portal after she swam three events at NCAAs last season and scored in all three of her events at the ACC Championships.
Utah’s Nick Chirafisi is another athlete in the portal. At the 2026 Big 12 Championships, he won both the 500 free and 1650 free, and at the 2026 NCAA Championships he took 20th in the 1650 freestyle.
Mary Nordmann and Lindi Worrell are also potential graduate transfers. Nordmann is currently at Northeastern, and she was a major point scorer for the Huskies at the CAA Championships, winning the 200 fly, finishing 7th in the 50 free, and taking 10th in the 100 fly.
Worrell is currently at Cincinnati, and she finished 3rd in the 100 breast at the Big 12 Championships last year before qualifying for NCAAs, where she took 21st in the event.
