Cynical What If, Power(less) Play, Villeneuve Honored, OHL Leaders, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I had a light go off while enjoying a cigar with one of my more cynical Blackhawks fan friends recently. He believes everyone should be fired and the players — all of them — are overrated and suck and will never amount to anything. But he said something from the depths of his dubitation that actually gave me pause. He said “these Blackhawks were never going to beat Vegas or Carolina or Dallas or Montreal anyway.”

So… let’s play that mindset forward. If the Blackhawks play a significant chunk of games against the teams “they weren’t going to beat anyway” to start the season… there has to be some course correction at some point, right? The Blackhawks did beat Pittsburgh and St. Louis and Winnipeg. When we get to the middle of November and the Blackhawks get Columbus and Calgary and Vancouver and Seattle, certainly those games are more favorable than the first… 20 percent of the season we’re experiencing right now.

Maybe get the losses out of the way early and see if the Blackhawks show better against teams in their figurative — and, in some cases, literal — weight class?

The Blackhawks will look to get on track tonight against the Los Angeles Kings. LA isn’t playing well on the whole; they’re 3-5-2 and 3-2-2 on the road already. Their top center, Quinton Byfield, has struggled and missed the two games because of an upper-body injury. Of course, Byfield returned to the Kings’ lineup at Madison Square Garden last night and the Kings hammered the Rangers 6-3 with three of their goals coming from defensemen.

Even with their dominant win last night, this is a game in which the Blackhawks need to find a full 60-minute effort and come out of with points in the standings. The schedule has been — and will continue to be — incredibly hard to start the season. The winnable games can’t be taken for granted. And the Kings playing the second half of a back-to-back with travel between games at the end of an extended road trip has to be viewed as a winnable game.

A really good column from Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times on the hard part of evaluating this Blackhawks team being… what are they? And what should they be? Whose fault is it they aren’t that yet? And… yeah, the schedule hasn’t been kind — and won’t be until mid-November.

I have a confession: I’m not sure how to analyze the Blackhawks right now.Oh, they've been bad so far. I can tell you that. But who's to blame? How indicative is it? And what's going to happen next? Those questions send me into logic loops. New column: t.co/yu0sYLShdO

He shared Blashill’s response on Twitter. Here you go: Speaking of which, Scott Powers went deep-dive on the Blackhawks’ power play for The Athletic on Tuesday morning.

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) October 27, 2026 Yesterday I shared the newly-published preliminary watch list for the 2027 NHL Draft from NHL Central Scouting. If you’re interested in a few opinions on the grades, individual players and the class overall, Steven Ellis wrote some thoughts at Daily Faceoff. Scott Wheeler and Corey Pronman also shared theirs at The Athletic. Here are your OHL goal scoring leaders. Blackhawks prospect Ryan Roobroeck right at the top. While we’re talking about the Blackhawks’ 2026 NHL Draft class, Xavier Villeneuve was named Hockey East’s Rookie of the Week!

— BU Men's Hockey (@TerrierHockey) October 26, 2026 The Hawks’ opponent tonight, the LA Kings, placed forward Mats Zuccarello on IR with an upper-body injury on Monday. The Philadelphia Flyers announced defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen (upper-body) is expected to be out approximately two weeks. On Monday, the Carolina Hurricanes activated forward Taylor Hall from injured reserve. Finally, on Sunday the Canes finally signed defenseman Alexander Nikishin to a one-year, $3M contract. We’ll see if he gets on the ice at some point with the Canes, or if this simply expedites the trade that he requested. It’s also worth noting that Nikishin will be eligible for an offer sheet next summer.
