Scratch DeForest Buckner Off That Bears Trade Targets List ...Middle East

Welp. You can cross DeForest Buckner off the list of potential trade targets for the Chicago Bears. The Indianapolis Colts have agreed to trade the veteran defensive lineman to the San Francisco 49ers this afternoon.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Buckner is heading to San Francisco, reuniting him with the 49ers, who selected him in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Colts will receive a 2027 fourth-round pick for Buckner, and San Francisco will pay the $7.944 million remaining on his expiring contract.

This is the Colts’ second move of the day, and they probably aren’t done. Their first was trading eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seahawks. Indianapolis received a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick from Seattle for Nelson, another veteran on an expiring deal.

All in all, Indianapolis has acquired three picks today:

The Colts do not own their first-rounder in 2027 (that went to the Jets in the Sauce Gardner deal last year), but now have a second-rounder, two third-rounders, two fourth-rounders, two fifth-rounders (one comp pick), and a sixth-rounder (also a comp pick). Not bad, and they’re not done.

Defensive lineman Grover Stewart, running back Jonathan Taylor, and wide receiver Josh Downs are other names to monitor.

For San Francisco, they needed to answer Seattle’s move this morning to upgrade their offensive line, and they did just that, finding their answer from the same seller just hours later.

Buckner was a name linked to the Bears, if only for positional need, and now we can remove that name from the board of potential targets. But one thing is clear: the Bears should get busy. Seattle and San Francisco were two legitimate threats to a potential Bears Super Bowl run this season when we woke up today, and before dinner, they’re both one starter better in the trenches.
