American swimmer Ryan Lochte has had a very hot-and-cold performance through 2 episodes of reality cooking show Worst Cooks in America, but has so far survived to the third round of competition.
The show, which airs Sundays on Food Network, pits notoriously bad cooks against each other and attempts to teach them how to be better cooks. Lochte is one of 10 contestants competing on the special celebrity 30th season of the show.
In episode 1, Lochte was nominated for elimination, being pitted against rapper Romeo Miller in the blind challenge. They each had 50 minutes to create a chicken skewer dish with a sauce, and then the judges decided who got to stay and who went home.
Lochte was stressed over the pressure of the moment, but ultimately prevailed presenting a chicken and bell pepper skewer with a sriracha mayo sauce. He received compliments for his sauce pairing, though judges critiqued his undercook on the bell peppers.
While Romeo’s skewers looked a little better, the judges ultimately chose Lochte’s dish as the better of the two.

In episode 2, Lochte bounced back in a big way. In the opening challenge, contestants on Lochte’s blue team had to prepare roasted turkey & bacon club sandwiches with giardiniera aioli, with a tomato bisque on the side.
Lochte received complements on his sandwich and on the texture of his soup, but thought a bit more salt and cream would help.
In the main dish challenge, contestants were assigned eggplant parmesan with handmade pasta. After receiving instructions and a demonstration from the lead chefs, they were given 60 minutes to execute the dish.
Judges gave Lochte rave reviews, saying that his eggplant was well seasoned and his pasta was well constructed. He was ultimately named the Blue team winner, which protected him from elimination.
Reality television star Lisa Barlow and reality television star Amara La Negra squared off in the elimination challenge, with La Negra coming away victorious and living to see another week.

There are currently 10 contestants still competing for the $50,000 first prize for charity, including Lochte.
