Did You Notice Where Darnell Wright Was on the Bears’ Game-Winning TD? ...Middle East

If you didn’t notice where Darnell Wright was lined up on Caleb Williams’ game-winning touchdown pass on Wild Card Saturday, just know that you are not alone.

Full disclosure: It didn’t hit me until Monday morning when this video share popped up on my timeline. And now, I am happy to share it here:

That is such a tremendous breakdown of that specific moment. We often think of these plays as singular beings. However, that isn’t the case with Ben Johnson’s offense. Plays are called and executed with a plan and purpose. Oftentimes, these plays set up things later. All the screen action the Bears had run previously opened the door for a shot play. I love how many plays Johnson’s scheme out of any given formation and alginment. But I digress, if only because I can’t stop thinking about where Darnell Wright is in this picture.

Darnell Wright’s versatility has me thinking about his future…

For all intents and purposes, Darnell Wright was lined up as a left tackle. Technically, he was a tackle-eligible lineman. A de facto tight end, if you will. But he acted how you would expect a left tackle to act on that play with how he bolted out to set up what Packers defenders clearly thought was going to be a screen out to the left with Luther Burden III. Meanwhile, it was all an illusion to free up DJ Moore down the left sideline. It all came together perfectly for the Bears, who threw Green Bay’s defense for a loop, got an easy score, and ultimately won the game.

In case you missed it, the Bears were dealt with a tough blow on Saturday with rookie left tackle Ozzy Trapilo suffering a season-ending injury. Trapilo has since been placed on injured reserve and will not be in the starting lineup for the rest of the postseason run. In his place, I expect Theo Benedet to take over as the starter with Braxton Jones possibly waiting in the wings. We’ll sort through the short-term stuff later in the week with a more expansive post. But right now, I want to address some big-picture stuff with Trapilo’s injury.

It seems as if this Ozzy Trapilo injury is serious enough to impact his return for the 2026 season. And while I’m not ready to dive deep into what the Bears could (and should) do this offseason, I’d be lying to you if I said I wasn’t thinking about the long-term status of the left tackle position. Trapilo played well enough down the stretch at left tackle to be seen as a viable candidate to start the 2026 campaign as the starting left tackle. Unfortunately, I don’t know if his health will allow him to do so. That stinks. But perhaps the Bears have an in-house option.

I might be off of my rocker, but I wonder if Darnell Wright could step into the mix as the Bears’ starting left tackle. Wright just posted his best season as a pro, earning second-team All-Pro honors and generating serious Pro Bowl consideration. A first-round pick in 2023, Wright has what it takes to make the switch to left tackle. However, I can understand why the powers that be at Halas Hall would want to keep him at a position he has thrived in since he was selected as the first first-round pick of the Ryan Poles regime. Then again, moving Wright to left tackle for this season was on the table at one point.

Again, we’ll dive deeper into the big picture stuff with this team later. If anyone needs me, I’ll be watching Darnell Wright on this play on loop for the rest of the afternoon and into the evening.
