The second day of the 2026 Junior Pan Pacific Championships from Vancouver gets underway this morning with preliminary heats across four events for both genders, starting with the 400 IM.

That will be followed by the 100 free and 100 breast, and then the session concludes with the 50 back, which will be contested at Junior Pan Pacs for the first time.

The girls’ 400 IM is an intriguing event with three finalists from the 2025 World Junior final in the field, including bronze medalist Shuna Sasaki, while the top seed belongs to Audrey Derivaux, who was 4th at World Juniors but set a best time of 4:37.27 this past May.

The boys’ 400 IM is paced by Japan’s Raito Numata, the reigning World Junior champion who clocked a new lifetime best of 4:10.29 in June to give him the top seed by more than two seconds over countryman Ayumu Negishi.

The girls’ 100 free will be a battle between Americans Gabi Brito, Aria Grossenbach, Abi Burke and Kate McKinnon for the two U.S. spots in the ‘A’ final, with Brito and Grossenbach having tied for the victory in the junior final at U.S. Nationals a few weeks ago.

Last night, Brito won gold in the 50 fly, while Burke was victorious in the 200 free.

The boys’ 100 free features Luka Mijatovic, fresh off a massive victory last night in the 800 free, though he’ll have his work cut out for him to make the ‘A’ final as fellow Americans Mike Rice and Jordan Ragland are also seeded atop the psych sheets. Each swimmer will have Lane 4 in their respective circle-seeded heat, with Ragland going first and Rice going last.

Japan was surprisingly shut out from winning any breaststroke gold medals last week at the senior Pan Pacs, but they’ve got a good chance to get moving in the right direction today, as Mana Ishikawa is the only swimmer seeded sub-1:08 in the girls’ 100 breast and Yusei Imaizu leads the boys’ field as the only one seeded under 1:00.

The girls’ 50 back is headlined by Brito and her American teammate Alyssa Sagle, with Sagle owning the fastest PB in the field in 28.03, while the boys’ race has Japan’s Toya Hirata sitting atop the entry lists at 25.29.

GIRLS’ 400 IM – PRELIMS

World Junior Record: 4:24.38, Summer McIntosh (CAN) – 2024 Junior Pan Pac Record: 4:36.79, Mio Narita (JPN) – 2022

‘A’ Finalists:

Audrey Derivaux (USA), 4:44.40 Sydney Hardy (USA), 4:44.83 Amelie Smith (AUS), 4:45.50 Shuna Sasaki (JPN), 4:45.80 Sadie Buckley (USA), 4:46.20 Ellie Clarke (USA), 4:50.01 Eloise McLellan (AUS), 4:52.63 Shima Taghavi (CAN), 4:54.74 Callie Cardiff (CAN), 4:54.75 Laila Chain (ARG), 4:54.89 Heidi Shumack (AUS), 4:55.27 Juliet Nicholson (CAN), 4:59.12 Michelle Zeng (CAN), 5:00.05 Shu Ning Julia Yeo (SGP), 5:02.75 Ariella Riley (NZL), 5:07.81

Audrey Derivaux opened up a big lead through the 300-meter mark before cruising home on the freestyle leg, doing just enough to hold off teammate Sydney Hardy to win Heat 2 and post the top time of the morning in the girls’ 400 IM in 4:44.40.

Hardy charged home in 30.06 over the final 50 meters, the only sub-31 in the field, to clock 4:44.83 and advance 2nd overall into the final, while another American, Sadie Buckley, was 3rd in the heat in 4:46.20. Despite being 5th-fastest overall, Buckley will be relegated to the ‘B’ final due to the two-per-country rule.

Derivaux owns a best time of 4:37.27, set this past May, while Hardy set a PB of 4:42.12 a few weeks ago at U.S. Nationals.

Australian Amelie Smith held off Japan’s Shuna Sasaki to win the first heat in 4:45.50, qualifying her 3rd for the final.

Smith owns a best time of 4:42.62, set earlier this year, while Sasaki, the 2025 World Junior bronze medalist in this event, has been as fast as 4:38.94.

BOYS’ 400 IM – PRELIMS

World Junior Record: 4:08.69, Yumeki Kojima (JPN) – 2026 Junior Pan Pac Record: 4:12.59, Chase Kalisz (USA) – 2012

‘A’ Finalists:

Raito Numata (JPN), 4:14.76 Ayumu Negishi (JPN), 4:17.59 Tatsuya Makiuchi (JPN), 4:18.72 Andre Labara (AUS), 4:20.20 Anthony Dornoff (USA) / Yi Zheng (USA) 4:21.43 – David Sammons (USA), 4:22.78 Cael Eley (AUS), 4:23.46 Trent Allen (USA), 4:23.63 Reagan Cheng (SGP), 4:25.08 Leny Grigor (AUS), 4:26.53 Pedro Oliveira (BRA), 4:26.67 Liam Chew (CAN), 4:26.69

Reigning World Junior champion Raito Numata left no doubt about his status heading into tonight’s final of the boys’ 400 IM, throwing down the top time of the morning by nearly three seconds to secure his spot in the ‘A’ final after his teammates Ayumu Negishi and Tatsuya Makiuchi went 1-2 in the heat prior.

Numata was strong across the board en route to posting a time of 4:14.76, and he should have plenty more in the tank tonight after setting a best time of 4:10.29 earlier this year. He should have a great chance at breaking Chase Kalisz‘s meet record of 4:12.59 set back in 2012.

Negishi won the Heat 1 in a time of 4:17.59, good for 2nd overall, while Makiuchi’s time of 4:18.72 was 3rd-fastest overall, but he’ll get bumped to the ‘B’ final due to the two-per-country rule.

Australian Andre Labara, 16, roared home in 28.87 en route to setting a personal best time of 4:20.20 and qualifying 3rd for the final, while Americans Anthony Dornoff and Yi Zheng tied for 4th at 4:21.43, moving both through to the ‘A’ final.

David Sammons was the next-fastest swimmer in 4:22.78, but will swim from the ‘B’ final due to Dornoff and Zheng finishing ahead of him.

At U.S. Nationals three weeks ago Zheng won the junior final in a PB of 4:14.82, while Dornoff set a best time of his own in 4:16.49 for 2nd. Sammons set a best of 4:20.65 earlier this season.
