Tough one for Aaron Rodgers, eh? Suuuch a shame. I know he’s long gone from the Packers, but that old feeling remains, especially as I think about certain quarters freaking out about Ben Johnson’s excitement, after years of them enjoying Rodgers trolling Bears fans.
Alex Bregman is already a Chicagoan for life:Hey @BleacherNation look who’s at the #Blackhawks game!! pic.twitter.com/Vpj0UxNG7D

— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) January 13, 2026 It’s probably true for most cities, but there’s just no better way to IMMEDIATELY ingratiate yourself to Cubs fans than by showing up to another Chicago sports team’s game(s). In town for his introductory news conference, presumably, and then the Cubs Convention. And Bregman is not the only new Cubs player who’ll be there:Edward Cabrera will be attending #Cubs Con!! pic.twitter.com/dNoiLmPD6j
— Crawly's Cubs Kingdom (@crawlyscubs) January 12, 2026 I expect that Bregman had to be in town anyway for his deal physical and, again, for some kind of news conference as part of the gig. But I find it especially cool that Cabrera, who didn’t choose to join the Cubs, is nevertheless immediately jumping on board to come to a fan convention in Chicago in January. You love to see that kind of buy-in. The Cubs don’t make these moves FOR the Convention, but I’m sure they are happy when they have some shiny new toys to show off. Unsurprisingly, this year’s Convention was sold out a day ago, thanks in part to the moves, and also the 10th anniversary celebration of the World Series win, and the 150th anniversary of the franchise joining the National League as a charter member. Fun fact: just two of the original eight charter members lasted more than three seasons in the NL. The Cubs, then the White Stockings, and the Braves, then the Boston Red Stockings. Additional fun fact: although the Cincinnati Red Stockings were the first fully professional baseball club in 1869, they disbanded shortly thereafter, and most of the players went to Boston to join the aforementioned Boston Red Stockings. The Chicago White Stockings, meanwhile, formed in 1870, played continuously from there as an organization, eventually taking on the Cubs name. So, when the Reds claim to be baseball’s first professional organization, that’s both true and also not true (the lineage of the current org traces back to 1881, not 1869). The Cubs have a better claim to being the OG from where I sit. Something to keep in mind when considering whether the Cubs should shop either of Nico Hoerner or Matt Shaw – we got spoiled last year by the Cubs not needing to draw too heavily on their bench, and that may not play out the same way this season:How much did Counsell rely on his regulars in '25?Six players (Busch, Crow-Armstrong, Happ, Hoerner, Suzuki, Swanson) appeared in 150+ games. That tied a single-season Cubs record set in 1968 (Banks, Beckert, Hundley, Kessinger, Santo, Williams).
— Jordan Bastian (@bastianmlb.bsky.social) 2026-01-11T18:52:39.382Z Interesting read at North Side Baseball about the types of swings in the Cubs’ lineup, and how Bregman helps balance the group out a bit more. It’s a whole lot of really steep swing paths, plus now Bregman and Moises Ballesteros. Wrote yesterday about new minor league signing Corbin Martin, and how his profile sure seems like a guy the Cubs would really, really like. Turns out, they reportedly do have especially high hopes behind the scenes:Corbin Martin is who I was talking about: t.co/DFT9VwSw4U
— Ari Alexander (@AriA1exander) January 13, 2026 Alex Bregman was destined to be a Cub all along:I’ve watched Alex work tirelessly, chase his dream, and never forget where he came from. — Cubs Zone (@CubsZone) January 13, 2026 More here in the Sun-Times on the lawsuit by a transgender former Cubs employee who is suing the organization, alleging discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. The Yankees and Cody Bellinger/Scott Boras continue their stare-down, and it’s still very difficult for me to see them not eventually marrying back up given the obvious fit and need. The latest from The Athletic indicates that the Yankees’ offer to Bellinger – the one that preceded those reports about the Yankees deciding it was time to move on – was for five years and $155 to $160 million in present-day value. That would match or top each of the “real” values on the Bregman, Pete Alonso, and Kyle Schwarber signings, and sure would feel like a win for Bellinger and Boras. The rumors had it that Bellinger was looking for seven years and potentially an even higher AAV, so that’s the distance right now. He’s the youngest of those mentioned four players, so I’m sure that’s a factor in him wanting a longer deal. It’s hard to imagine he wants another deal with early opt-outs so that he can do this dance all over again.
