We’re one quarter of the way through the 2026 NFL season. Do you know where your favorite team is? The Bears are 3-1. That is a better start than last year. And they’ve done it with three different starting quarterbacks. That’s pretty impressive. As for what is happening elsewhere in the league, let’s discuss.
Two NFL officials were suspended for unprofessional conduct toward players during Week 4 games. Line judge Jeff Seeman (two games) and referee Adrian Hill (one game) are out. It was encouraging to read that the league handed down suspensions because it shows that the officials aren’t above the law. That said, this storyline isn’t going anywhere because the NFL Referees Association is challenging the officials’ suspensions. Hill was supposed to call the Bears game, but he won’t because of his suspension.I was standing right there. What’s wild is that it all started with Trey McBride saying “please” when pleading his case for a PI flag. He was heated for sure, but I never heard a curse from him. The harshest he got was, “You’re ruining the game.”
— Aditi Kinkhabwala (@AKinkhabwala) October 5, 2026 I am irked by the Vikings leading the NFC North. There is no denying that defense is amazing. And I hope it gets Brian Flores a head coaching job somewhere, so long as it isn’t with the Packers. But whatever is happening in Minnesota feels fluky. As someone who watched stellar defenses prop up competitive teams, I feel well-equipped to understand what is happening with the Vikings. Still, I hate that it’s happening and hope someone puts an end to it soon. This is an insane stat and is totally sustainable over 17 games:Teams to start 4-0 that didn’t score a touchdown in two of the four wins: 2026 Minnesota #Vikings 1923 Chicago Cardinals 1922 Chicago Cardinals #Skol
— John Todd (@JohnToddNFL) October 4, 2026 Elsewhere in the NFC North, contract extension talks between the Detroit Lions and star tight end Sam LaPorta have broken off. Both sides hoped that working into the season would lead to a deal, but nothing has materialized. There is plenty of time to work out a deal, so I’m not sounding the alarm just yet. But if something doesn’t get done, LaPorta will hit free agency in March 2027. LaPorta, 25, was a Pro Bowler as a rookie in 2023. He hasn’t matched the heights of his rookie season (86 catches, 889 receiving yards, 10 TDs) since, but LaPorta remains a dangerous weapon in Detroit’s offense.NFL TALK ON THE BN BEARS PODCAST: Apple | Spotify | YouTube
All five teams that entered Week 4 at 0-3 lost this past week. That means the league has five 0-4 teams. One team I think might be in danger of falling to 0-5 is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who play the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday Night Football. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio opines that Bucs Head Coach Todd Bowles may be running out of time to right the ship. Injury issues are further complicating matters in Tampa. Star defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr. is out an estimated 2-4 weeks with a fractured rib. Quarterback Baker Mayfield is expected to miss up to six weeks because of a thumb injury. I wonder what the Bucs will look like when they face the Bears Nov. 8 on Sunday Night Football. NFL QB Baker Mayfield. Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images The New York Jets made some weird history in their loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 4. Despite the defeat, they land in the “winners” section of this CBS Sports look back at the winners and losers of NFL Week 4:They undoubtedly would have preferred a win, but they did get a huge monkey off their back in the second quarter of that defeat when five-time Pro Bowl safety Minkah Fitzpatrick picked off Tyson Bagent for the franchise’s first interception in 637 days. At long last, the drought is over.
The 20 games New York went between interceptions was an NFL record. It was a defining element of the team’s defensive ineptitude last year and carried over into the first month of 2026, even as the unit showed modest signs of improvement. What remains clear is that there is still a lot of work to be done on that side of the ball, considering the takeaway was not enough to keep Chicago and its backup quarterback in check.
