Three Man Utd players who want to leave – and two who are keen to stay ...Middle East

With Michael Carrick sworn in to try and calm the waters at Manchester United, attention turns to what another season of turmoil means for their biggest stars.

There are some seismic decisions to make this summer – and some will not be around to see if their 12th head coach in 13 years can rise the club from its slumber.

Bruno Fernandes

Several sources have told The i Paper there is a general fear that Bruno Fernandes has had enough and will look to leave.

The captain is highly thought of by everybody at the club for what he does on and off the pitch and remains their best hope of salvaging another disappointing season.

However, sources questioned whether a 31-year-old who retains ambitions to win league titles can keep dragging United forward almost single-handedly.

Fernandes admitted in an interview with The i Paper last year that there were offers from Saudi Arabia last summer, ones he and the club entertained. That interest is expected to be renewed.

Fernandes had a good relationship with Ruben Amorim and the thought of another interim head coach, then another fresh face in the summer, may be too much.

A move to another top European club is not out of the question, even at his age. Bayern Munich remain potential suitors, The i Paper understands. The German giants are not afraid to sign established names who are far from young – they paid £87m for 30-year-old Harry Kane in 2023.

It is understood Fernandes’ contract includes a clause that would allow him to join a club outside England for £57m.

Marcus Rashford

Rashford has hit the ground running at Barcelona, registering 14 goal contributions this season.

Sources close to the player believe he is benefitting from being in a new environment, away from the English media glare, somewhere he has been made to feel welcome after a difficult recent relationship with his boyhood club.

The i Paper understands the player is desperate to stay in Catalonia and sources said that with more clarity about where his permanent future lies, Rashford has even more to give in La Liga.

Amorim’s exit will not alter United’s plans to move Rashford on. The England forward holds no ill will towards United and he hopes he would be welcome back, whenever that time comes. He is understood to still be in touch with a lot of the players and he still watches every game he can.

But United made their intentions clear when they inserted a low option-to-buy fee in his loan – just £26m.

Barcelona want to make the deal a permanent one. Cash remains tight but they are expected to find the money to make the transfer happen.

Kobbie Mainoo

One academy graduate who stands to benefit from Amorim’s exit is Kobbie Mainoo.

The 20-year-old’s desire to leave United in January divided the fanbase, with many turning on Mainoo after his half-brother’s “Free Kobbie” T-shirt stunt.

Mainoo made one start under Amorim this season, the ill-fated Grimsby defeat, which forced him to seek more first-team football in a World Cup year. He had wanted to leave on loan and did not want to totally give up on his boyhood club. Such was his misery on the bench, however, sources close to the player said he had been open to permanent opportunities away from Old Trafford.

That move had been blocked by the club. Amorim’s exit means a change in system, with more bodies needed in midfield, and Fernandes not forced deeper. Mainoo will almost certainly get the action he needs where he is. Carrick is a fan too, which helps matters.

Jadon Sancho

One certainty in the summer is that Jadon Sancho will leave as one of the most expensive flops in the club’s history, regardless of whoever comes in as head coach.

The i Paper has been told that senior United figures are very much done with Sancho, and will not take up the option to extend his current contract, letting him leave on a free in the summer.

What the future holds for the 25-year-old is unclear. His bit-part role on loan at Aston Villa is hardly attracting suitors.

Andre Onana

One player who retains faint hopes of getting another shot at United is Andre Onana.

Onana’s time in Manchester was error-strewn, but sources close to the player believe that if a head coach comes in who favours goalkeepers playing the ball out with their feet – like Xavi – they may turn to the Trabzonspor loanee once more.

Such an eventuality is unlikely, given Onana’s replacement Senne Lammens has settled in well.
