A new steakhouse restaurant and speakeasy with a recognizable name is adding a second location on the North Shore.
Evanston’s popular steakhouse restaurant The Barn is expanding with a second location in Highland Park, according to a press release, with doors expected to open next month. The restaurant comes from well-known restauranter Amy Morton, the daughter of Arnie Morton, who built the legendary restaurant chain Morton’s The Steakhouse.
In addition to the new Highland Park outpost, Morton hinted at other locations to come.
“The Barn isn’t about copy and paste,” Morton said in the release. “It’s about resonance — a brand that evolves with its neighborhood while always carrying the same heartbeat. Each location, Highland Park and future iterations included, should feel as though it’s always been there, yet could only exist right now.”
The restaurant is set to open near Central Avenue in downtown Highland Park in the former Little Szechwan Restaurant spot, at 1900 1st. St. Morton has been documenting the site’s renovation on social media, with the space expected to “conjure the nostalgia of old supper clubs,” the release said.
The spot will accommodate about 80 guests in the main dining room, with a 12-seat zinc bar off the entryway. Nearby — past an unmarked door and down a nearby alley — will be 1898, the release said, a 25-seat speakeasy-style bar and private event space.
The Barn Steakhouse Highland Park will feature the Evanston restaurants’ “greatest hits,” including prime cuts, a little gem salad, caviar sandwich, crab spaghetti and shrimp “zorine.” The restaurant’s culinary directory, Russell Kook, competed on Hell’s Kitchen and Iron Chef America, and most recently comes from The Bellevue in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood.
The Barn Steakhouse Highland Park is set to open in February 2026, according to the release, with the adjacent speakeasy expected to open in March.
