A 15-year-old girl in Kentucky was fatally shot, and the teenager who allegedly pulled the trigger has been charged with her murder. Meanwhile, the man who owned the gun that fired the fatal shot has also been arrested for his connection to the tragic incident.
Police in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, said that officers were called to a Lowe’s parking lot around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, January 11, after they received a report that a girl had been shot in the chest. Upon their arrival, police found Bryan Harbison giving CPR to the 15-year-old victim. Meanwhile, police learned that there was another 15-year-old girl at the scene of the crime.
The wounded victim was taken to Baptist Health Hardin where she was later pronounced dead. The teen girl’s name had not been released as of time of publication.
“Obviously, this is terribly tragic. As I said, our most sincere thoughts and prayers go out,” Elizabethtown Police Department Public Affairs Officer Chris Denham said during a press conference regarding the incident, WAVE reported. “A lot of lives are devastated and ruined. I can’t imagine, from a parent’s standpoint, what it would be like to lose a 15-year-old child.”
15-Year-Old Girl Fatally Shot by Teen Allegedly Waving Gun on New Year's Day
Harbison, 21, allegedly told officers that he met the teens through Snapchat and claimed he believed that the victim was 18 years old. He explained that he bought alcohol before picking the two teenage girls up and added that they were all hanging out and drinking together in the Lowe’s parking lot.
He said he was in the back seat of his truck with the victim, with the other 15-year-old girl seated up front, when the shooting happened. While speaking to police, the other teen admitted to picking up a handgun she found inside the vehicle, pointing it at the victim and pulling the trigger.
“The family of the deceased, when notification was made, they thought that their child was asleep in bed, and they were being told that her life was taken,” Denham said.
According to police, Harbison and the teen suspect shared different accounts of how she found the firearm in the vehicle during their interviews. The teen suspect claimed that Harbison put the gun on the center console and told her it was not loaded. Meanwhile, Harbison said the gun was secured in the glove compartment and alleged that the suspect took it out without his knowledge.

The teen suspect – whose name has also not been released due to her age – is in custody and has been charged with murder, according to police.
Harbison was also arrested and was charged with third-degree unlawful transaction with a minor and first-degree wanton endangerment, according to online records viewed by Us Weekly. He is currently in custody at Hardin County Jail and is being held on a $10,000 cash bond.
It’s not currently clear if Harbison has entered a plea or retained legal counsel.
While reflecting on Harbison’s charges, Denham added, “You are responsible for any firearm you own at all times. Failing to keep it secure is negligent, and its criminal.”
