Macclesfield 2-1 Crystal Palace Stats: Non-League Club Stun Reigning FA Cup Holders in the Third Round ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

Sixth-tier side Macclesfield knocked out reigning FA Cup holders Crystal Palace in one of the biggest FA Cup shocks in history.

Macclesfield stunned reigning holders Crystal Palace in the third round of this season’s competition with one of the biggest FA Cup upsets in history on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Paul Dawson and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts put the National League North side into a 2-0 lead, and despite a last-minute consolation from Yéremy Pino, the sixth-tier side held on to become the first non-league team to eliminate the FA Cup holders since Crystal Palace knocked out Wolves in the 1908-09 first round.

Palace named a weakened side, but there were still established Premier League and international stars in their lineup, with England’s Marc Guéhi and Adam Wharton in Oliver Glasner’s XI. Despite plenty of the ball, Palace struggled to break down their plucky non-league hosts, and Macclesfield took the lead just minutes before the half-time break.

A free-kick was swung into the box by Luke Duffy and headed past Walter Benítez by Macclesfield captain Dawson in the 43rd minute.

That lead was doubled on the hour-mark when Buckley-Ricketts diverted a wayward shot past a despairing Benítez with an outstretched leg. With that strike, the home side became the first non-league team to score twice in an FA Cup match against a Premier League team since Kettering Town vs Fulham in 2009, and the first against the holders since Runcorn vs Preston in 1939.

Pino scored the goal of the game in the 90th minute from a curling direct free-kick, but Macclesfield held on to cause an almighty shock.

Macclesfield are the first non-league club to defeat a Premier League side in the FA Cup since Lincoln City’s win at Burnley in round five of the 2016-17 competition, and the first to do so at home against a top-flight team since Sutton United’s 2-1 win over Coventry City in January 1989 (third round).
