PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Another school is joining Monroe County ‘s School Bus Safety Program.
Pittsford school buses will now have stop-arm cameras that record drivers who illegally pass buses when the stop-arm is extended.
A 30-day warning period started on Jan. 5, 2026. During this time, those caught illegally passing buses will get warning letters without fines. Starting on Feb. 9, those caught will face a $250 fine for a first offense.
The goal of the cameras is to keep kids safe, and make sure drivers are cautious around buses at all times.
“We are grateful to the county for implementing this important program to enforce laws that protect students when school buses are stopped,” said Superintendent Shana Cutaia in a press release.
Hilton, Webster, East Irondequoit, and Greece school districts had similar cameras installed on school buses in 2023. Spencerport, West Irondequoit, and Rochester school districts have also had cameras installed on buses.
The warning period is still in effect for Rochester City School District buses as well. It was originally set to end on Jan. 5, but was extended to Jan. 20 so more videos can be reviewed.
