An early morning apartment fire in Chicago’s South Austin Neighborhood left two adults and four kids hospitalized on New Year’s Day, authorities said.
Around 5:38 a.m., a fire started in an apartment building near the intersection of West Adams Street and South Waller Avenue, police said.
Several people were trapped in an apartment on the third floor when firefighters arrived, some who had to be rescued from the top floor window.
Six people were injured, including four children, the Chicago Fire Department said. All were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Two adults and two children were initially listed in critical condition, CFD said, and two of the children were in fair condition.
The building’s property manager, Roman Viere, told NBC Chicago he looked inside a unit on the top floor and saw it was “burnt up.”
He said he “saw smoke and a lot of damage” and that at least one unit on the floor where the fire broke out is experiencing water damage from the extinguishing efforts.
“I can’t imagine what these people are going through,” Viere said. “I woke up in a warm bed, and these poor people have to wake up to a fire, water raining down on top of them.”
Police said the fire was started “accidentally.”
The building has 15 units and Viere said it is lucky the fire did not spread.
Viere said the building’s management company, Urban Alternatives, is reaching out to residents affected by the fire to offer assistance.
