BATAVIA, N.Y. — National Grid deployed more than 3,000 crews to assess damage and restore power following this week’s storms. News10NBC’s Erin Mahon Tuesday was at the Batavia Fire Station, where residents picked up supplies.

Many people drove through the station to collect water and dry ice, as they lost power or water access due to the storm. Despite the challenges, most remained in good spirits, expressing familiarity with such weather conditions.

National Grid established three supply centers across upstate New York. At the Batavia center, residents received water and dry ice for their homes.

“Just using buckets to kind of just flush the toilets and things like that and then going out and filling the water jug,” Scott Rennicks said.

Russ Felski mentioned that Darien experienced only minor outages. “Darien hasn’t been bad — just a little flickering outage here and there and no major trees down that I’ve seen,” Felski said.

Arnold Shaffer, a snowplow driver, picked up water for himself and a neighbor. “The wind – the snow, no. The wind? Yes. The wind is the worst,” Shaffer said. He advised caution on the roads, especially in open areas.

National Grid expected to restore power to most customers by 11:30 p.m. For single customer outages and hard-to-reach areas, restoration may extend into Wednesday.

The company reminded residents to place generators outside to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. By 4 p.m., National Grid had restored power to about 95% of customers.

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office cancelled the county travel advisory at 3 p.m. Tuesday, while reminding motorists to drive with caution due to the potential for blowing and drifting snow accumulation on roads.
