National sports institutions in Mexico and Argentina have both selected aquatic athletes as winners of their top annual sports honors.

Mexico

Claudia Sheinbaum, the president of Mexico, presented World Champion diver Osmar Olvera with the 2025 Premio Nacional del Deporte (National Sports Prize).

Olvera, 21, spearheaded Mexico’s historic diving showing at the 2025 World Championships in Singapore. Olvera amassed one gold and three silvers in Singapore. In the 3m Springboard event, he severed an 18-year Chinese winning streak in the event with a final score of 529.55.

The Mexico City native also added on a silver in the 1m springboard event. With partner Juan Celaya, Olvera reaped silver in the synchro 3m. In the team event, Olvera joined forces with Randal Willars, Alejandra Estudillo, and Zyanya Parra to pick up another silver for El Tri.

In total, Mexico won seven diving medals in Singapore, the second most of any country behind China. This marks an increase from the six they earned in 2023 and zero in 2022.

Olvera received his prize from North America’s first female president alongside co-winner Isaac del Toro. del Toro, a cyclist, was a stage winner at the Giro d’Italia and the overall runner-up.

Argentina

Argentina’s Olympic Committee selected Agostina Hein as its female “Best Athlete of the Year” winner.

Hein, 17, had a breakout year in 2025, highlighted by her junior world title in the 400 IM in 4:34.34. At the Junior World Championships, she also notched a silver medal in the 800 free (8:26.19).

Immediately prior to Junior Worlds, Hein had competed at the Junior Pan American Games. There, she topped the podium thrice individually – in the 400 IM, 200 IM, and 400 free – while also aiding Argentina to five relay medals.

Hein kept riding her championship season high throughout the fall and winter, breaking Argentine records at six different meets in total.

She received the honor earlier this week alongside the male Best Athlete of the Year winner, two-time Junior Pan-Am canoe champion Vincente Vergauven. The male aquatic sports nominee was World Championships semifinalist Ulises Saravia. Another swimmer made the nominee list under “school sport” category: 14-year-old Laila Chain.

Note that Argentina’s most popular sport, soccer, did not have nominees in the field.

With respective populations of approximately 132 million and 46 million, Mexico and Argentina stand as the 2nd and 4th biggest countries in Latin America.
