Minor League Free Agency Arrives: Some Cubs Head Out, Some Sticking Around ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

It’s the less-heralded free agency, but it matters, too: a number of Chicago Cubs minor leaguers have reached free agency and can now sign deals elsewhere.

Per Baseball America, here are the Cubs’ minor league free agents who did not re-sign with the club before hitting the open market:

RHP Kohl Franklin (AAA) RHP Eduarniel Núñez (AAA) RHP Collin Snider (AAA) RHP Andrew Wantz (AAA) LHP Luis Peralta (AAA) C Ethan Hearn (AAA) C Austin Wynns (AAA) 1B Tyler Austin (AAA) SS Jackson Cluff (AAA) OF Jordan George-Nwogu (AAA) OF Greg Jones (AAA) OF Chas McCormick (AAA)

Just 12 free agents for the Cubs, which was fewer than all but five other organizations. This is not the only time period when players at the edges of the organization turnover, however, so that doesn’t necessarily mean a whole lot. At the end of the year, for example, guys like Antoine Kelly, Corbin Martin, and Owen Miller hit free agency after being outrighted, and they kinda fit this same mold. The Cubs also released Ed Howard and Michael Carico, both formerly notable prospects, near the end of the season. So, again, same deal: you could mentally add them to the list above, and it starts to get a lot longer.

There’s the answer on the next-step-for-Tyler-Austin question, by the way, as he is now free to sign elsewhere after not appearing with the Cubs in 2026.

Elsewhere, Kohl Franklin is the big name, given the annual upside he offers, but the various injury issues. He was back on the mound late this season and I’d still really like to see the Cubs give him more time to break out. But I could understand if, at this point, both sides were to decide it’s best for him to get a shot in another organization. Hopefully the sides can come to a new deal, though.

Most of the other free agents were either signed as minor league free agents before or during the season, and were thus always going to hit free agency again if they hadn’t made a big league impact.

As far as the would-have-been free agents the Cubs have retained, we already know about Gabe Klobosits, but Arizona Phil suggests the list also includes righties Kenyi Perez, Yanayer Luis Abreu, Tyler Ras, Vince Reilly, and Tyler Schlaffer, lefty Evan Taylor, infielders Reggie Preciado and Karson Simas, and outfielder Alexander Ramirez. It’s a strong group of guys to retain, many of whom have legitimate big league upside in depth roles if things break right.
