The Blackhawks will be back on the ice for their final game before the Christmas break tonight with Philly in town. The Hawks will have to find a way to win without both Connor Bedard and Frank Nazar.
The silver lining on that cloud is it looks like we might see captain Nick Foligno back in the lineup tonight; we’ll know for sure after the morning skate, but he was a full participant at practice yesterday. The fact that the Blackhawks haven’t put Nazar on IR yet — and haven’t recalled any reinforcements from Rockford — leads me to think Foligno is close enough that he could go tonight.
Kalen Lumpkins from the Chicago Tribune asked Blackhawks assistant coach Mike Vellucci about Nick Lardis‘ ice time after the skate on Monday. Not surprisingly, his answer was that the Blackhawks want to put the young sniper in positions to succeed, and his use is situational more than just “here’s 17 minutes have fun!”“Sometimes that happens in games where your ice time isn’t there, whether it’s a lot of power plays or a lot of penalty kills, it’s just the way the situation goes,” Vellucci said. “Hopefully (his first goal) opens him up a little bit. I don’t just look at goals, I look at opportunities.”
I’m going to drop a new mock draft before the World Junior Championship begins. Unfortunately (maybe fortunately, depending on your perspective) the Blackhawks would own the No. 1 spot in the draft lottery if the season ended today. Injuries have led to a worst-case scenario for the Blackhawks over the past few weeks, and it isn’t going to get easier with Nazar out for a month. With that in mind, Scott Powers and Corey Pronman at The Athletic looked at what a high lottery pick might mean for the Blackhawks in 2026. Here’s a good comment from Pronman:“Tynan Lawrence feels like their type of player,” Pronman said. “He’s a supercharged version of Oliver Moore and would give them an elite young group of centers. Ivar Stenberg or Gavin McKenna would give Bedard a true top offensive talent to play with. Keaton Verhoeff would be the type of premium D talent that feels most ideal to them that they need more of. They have good young defensemen, but other than Levshunov, nobody is really a top-end talent, and Verhoeff is more well-rounded than Levshunov.”
The Blackhawks have gone 3-10-2 in their last 15 games. With that, the top of the Central has left them behind and their playoff chances have fallen. That could mean another top-5 pick. With the help of @coreypronman, an early look at that possibility t.co/oYIhxZ3sAl
— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) December 20, 2025 Another game, another goal from Blackhawks prospect Roman Kantserov in the KHL. He’s up to 24 and still leads the league in that regard. Kantserov has five goals and three assists in his last five games.#Blackhawks prospect Roman Kantserov scores his 24th goal of the season on the PP to give Metallurg the lead in the 3rd! 36 GP 24-17–41 PTS #MMG #KHL pic.twitter.com/YlKyaSrdkx
— Hockey News Hub (@HockeyNewsHub) December 22, 2025 Matt Grzelcyk might have been fined for cross-checking Ottawa’s Tim Stützle over the weekend, but he’s been a fabulous win for the program thus far this season. A guy who had 40 points last year in Pittsburgh — including 15 assists on the power play — likely didn’t get a contract offer because… he isn’t six-feet tall. He took a PTO from the Blackhawks as a veteran option out of camp, and he’s now running a power play unit and skating bigger minutes. All for a minimum salary that should make him a very popular person before the trade deadline. Good read here from Ben Pope on how he’s been effective.Matt Grzelcyk is giving the Blackhawks much-needed steadiness in a larger-than-expected role. He's averaged 20+ min over the last 6 games. Not bad for a camp PTO signing."There’s less highs and lows with him."New story: t.co/4FPngJRq6I
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) December 22, 2025 The Carolina Hurricanes announced both Seth Jarvis and Jaccob Slavin are week to week with upper-body injuries. The Seattle Kraken placed defenseman Brandon Montour on IR after having surgery on his hand. He’ll be out for four weeks.BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
