Nick Reiner, the son of Hollywood actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner has been arrested as a suspect in the killing of his father and mother, Michele.
The couple were found dead in their home over the weekend, Los Angeles police said.
Nick was arrested several hours after his parents were found dead by their youngest child, 28-year-old daughter Romy, in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood of LA on Sunday.
He is being held without bail. Investigators believe his parents died of stab wounds.
Reiner, 78, a celebrated director and actor, is best remembered for his films When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride and This is Spinal Tap.
Addiction struggles
Nick, the couple’s middle son, had struggled with substance abuse since he was a teenager. The 32-year-old spoke openly about his heroin addiction and periods of homelessness, which occurred when he refused to seek treatment, for years.
In a 2016 interview with People magazine, he said he first entered rehab for substance abuse at the age of 15. According to other reports, he said he had been to rehab at least 17 times by the time he was 22 years old.
“The programme works for some people, but it can’t work for everybody,” his father told the LA Times in 2015. “When Nick would tell us that it wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen. We were desperate, and because the people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son.”
Michele said: “We were so influenced by these people. They would tell us he’s a liar, that he was trying to manipulate us. And we believed them.”
Nick’s experiences with addiction inspired the film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote with his father. The film, a dramatisation of Nick’s addiction troubles, centres on David, an actor who is running for governor, and his son, who is addicted to drugs and feels under pressure to get sober to avoid embarrassing his father.
Speaking to then LA Times reporter Steven Zeitchick shortly after the film’s premiere, Nick said: “It was tough at first, to think, ‘Am I actually going to do this?’
“I really wasn’t sure I wanted to do this. Am I really going to get it out there?”
His father told the reporter: “I’m so proud; it’s incredible. He’s been through everything; it’s so hard, you’re in this position of no control. And how he’s sober, here on his 22nd birthday, and he wrote this movie.”

In the same year, while promoting the film, Nick opened up about his decision to quit heroin.
“I got sick of doing that,” he told the LA Times. “I come from a nice family. I’m not supposed to be out there on the streets and in homeless shelters doing all these… things.”
After Being Charlie, Nick did not write another completed film. He is also not listed in any other film credits on IMDb.
In an interview with The Guardian last year, his father said some of his children had been unsure about their career paths.
“My son is 32 and my daughter’s 26,” he said. “They both want careers, they’re both talented. Should I lean into it? Should I back away from it? They’re confused. I said, once they find their own path, it won’t matter.”
Asked in a 2015 interview with Variety if he would work with his father again, Nick said: “I love working with my dad, but I need to be independent and do my own stuff.”
He also said his relationship with his father grew while making the movie.
Reported row hours before deaths
Local media reported that Nick had been spotted arguing with his parents on Saturday night at a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien.
The heated argument was very loud, according to reports.
A source told NBC News that Rob and Michele Reiner were upset and embarrassed about their son’s behaviour at the event.
Another source said Nick’s conduct had made other guests feel uncomfortable.
Police have not said anything about a motive for the killings.
