After country star Barbara Mandrell sold Fontanel, the 27,000-square-foot home became a filming location before opening to visitors in 2010.

Barbara Mandrell’s former Tennessee mansion took on a different role after music managers Dale Morris and Marc Oswald bought it in 2002. Rather than remaining a private home, the 27,000-square-foot log house became a setting for film and television productions before opening to the public in June 2010.

Known as Fontanel, the mansion sits in Whites Creek, near Nashville. Mandrell and her family lived there for 14 years, from its construction in 1988 until the sale in 2002. The property’s next chapter connected the former family home to country music in a new way.

Morris and Oswald were already established in the music business. Their work with country artists helped shape their plans for the estate, which became a place where visitors could explore the home and see items connected to the music industry.

Before Fontanel welcomed tourists, the mansion was used for television productions and music video shoots. It later appeared in the television series Gone Country and the film Country Strong, bringing the house into the entertainment world beyond its connection to Mandrell.

The change gave the property a new purpose after the family’s departure. Instead of serving only as a residence, the estate became a location for productions and, eventually, a place where fans could visit.

The house itself helped draw attention. Built from logs and spread across three floors, it has more than 20 rooms, 13 bathrooms, two kitchens and five fireplaces. Other features include an indoor pool atrium and an indoor shooting range.

When the estate opened to visitors in June 2010, guests could tour the mansion and see photographs, collections and music memorabilia. Items connected to artists managed by Morris and Oswald helped link the house to Nashville’s country music scene.

The property expanded beyond the mansion, developing into a destination with hospitality, outdoor activities and live entertainment. Its attractions included trails, a winery, a distillery, a zipline operation and an amphitheater. The estate’s role had shifted from a family residence to a larger visitor experience.

Fontanel’s public life continued for years, but the estate later faced another major change. In February 2019, Chicago-based BlueRoad Ventures purchased the property for $14.5 million. Later that year, management announced that Fontanel was closing for the time being, although some outdoor areas remained open.

The closure marked a new turning point for a property that had already moved through several different roles. It had begun as Mandrell’s family home, become a filming location after its sale, and developed into a tourist destination under its new owners.

In 2022, Clinton Holcomb bought the mansion and about 116 acres for $6.1 million. Renovations later refreshed parts of the home, including its floors, railings, main bedroom and indoor pool area.

This year, the mansion had reopened for weddings and private events, offering a new way for people to experience the property, according to The Boot. The venue can accommodate up to 350 guests.

Fontanel’s changing use reflects the unusual history of Mandrell’s former home. A house built for a country music star and her family became a production location, a tourist attraction and, later, an event venue.
