This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Joseph Shores.
Shores is a first year student at UNC who co-developed an AI model with a focus on environmental sustainability. AI is generating a lot of concerns, including the amount of energy it uses and the long term impact on our energy grid, on climate change, and more. Even before he was UNC, Shores was developing an AI model that decreasing the amount of load that was on the model and can increase the efficiency of the model with the same accuracy of other AI models. He and his partner even added a feature on their model that shows you how much energy you’ve saved by using their model.
