WASHINGTON DC – Even by current local standards, Donald Trump’s social media posting on Monday about the apparent killing of the celebrated film director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, stunned millions of Americans. The fact that the President of the United States is a narcissist and completely devoid of grace has long been apparent thanks to his failure throughout both his terms in office to pay tribute to notable Americans with whom he politically disagreed.
But the bile and loathing exhibited in Trump’s message on Truth Social about the Reiners is a new low-point for the American presidency, and once again demonstrates that Trump’s willingness to descend into the mire has absolutely no floor.
The Reiner family, and the entire Hollywood establishment, is reeling from the news that one of the most beloved and talented couples in Los Angeles has suddenly had their lives cut short. The celebrity website TMZ, citing police sources, claims the Reiners’ throats were slit on Sunday night in their Brentwood, Los Angeles mansion. The bodies were reportedly discovered by the Reiners’ daughter, Romy. Late on Sunday, her 32-year old brother Nick was arrested in connection with the slayings, and is now being held in jail on $4 million (£2.9 million) bail.
In his foul, sardonic message, Trump danced on the Reiners’ bodies even before they had been removed from the home where they were allegedly murdered. Falsely describing Rob Reiner as “a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star”, Trump claimed that the couple had been killed “due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME”.
“He is known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J Trump”, continued the message, “with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”, ends the simply disgraceful post.
Reiner, much celebrated by moviegoers for directing classic Hollywood films including The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally and This is Spinal Tap, had become one of the President’s most outspoken critics in Tinseltown. As early as 2017, he told Variety that Trump was “the single most unqualified human being ever to assume the presidency of the United States”, and described the US leader as “mentally unfit”.
From there, his criticism of Trump became increasingly emboldened. As recently as October, in an interview with left-leaning MSNBC, Reiner predicted that 2026 could see the death of American democracy on Trump’s watch. “Our democracy is being taken away from us, and we only have about a year”, he warned. “We’re sliding downhill in a very, very fast way and we have to find a way to stop it.”

Together with his wife, he also organised and fundraised for a variety of progressive causes in America. He was a co-founder of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which led the fight to legalise same-sex marriage in California. He was a prominent voice advocating for early child development programmes, led anti-smoking initiatives and raised millions of dollars for a host of prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Kamala Harris and the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom.
He even predicted that Trump will flood American cities with troops next year in an effort to postpone the November 2026 mid-term elections if he fears the loss of Republican majorities on Capitol Hill, and encouraged Americans to stand up to the president’s authoritarianism.
Michele Singer Reiner had also infuriated not only Trump, but many of his most prominent ideological influencers. Last year, she co-produced God and Country, an acclaimed investigative documentary about the rise of Christian nationalism in the United States. The film served as a prescient warning of the direction in which key, far-right figures are taking the United States during Trump’s second presidency.

Even more notably, Mrs Reiner had crossed paths with Trump during an earlier era in which she was a successful photographer. She is credited with the cover image of the property mogul that graces the front of his book The Art of the Deal. Whether Trump recalls his 1987 association with her, remains unclear.
Trump’s social media posting stands in stark contrast to the fury he expressed towards Americans accused of celebrating the September assassination of far-right influencer Charlie Kirk. Then, he ordered the State Department to revoke the visas of any foreigners in America who had expressed approval of Kirk’s murder, and hundreds of people were fired from their jobs, despite America’s First Amendment guaranteeing freedom of speech.
Today, he stands accused of hypocrisy and of disgracing the honour of his office, with some of the criticism coming from his own “Make America Great Again” movement. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia rounded on Trump’s social media post, saying “this is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies…it’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy”, she wrote on X.
