The University of Northern Colorado Board of Trustees approved the contract of new wrestling head coach Teyon Ware at a meeting Friday on campus in Greeley.
Ware was hired in July to replace longtime coach Troy Nickerson, who left earlier in the summer for the same position at Army West Point.
Ware’s five-year deal includes a base salary of $97,325 and runs through June 30, 2030, according to the employment agreement provided to the board of trustees. The coach is eligible for standard exempt employee compensation adjustments.
He started work July 1.
Ware was a two-time NCAA champion at the University of Oklahoma and a four-time All-American, meaning he finished in the top eight at the NCAA Tournament. Ware won titles at 141 pounds in 2003 and 2005. He finished sixth in 2004 and second in 2006. Ware is a first-time head coach at the college level. He spent the previous three years as an assistant at Oklahoma. He was also an assistant at Wyoming for eight seasons. In that stretch, the Cowboys sent 33 wrestlers to NCAAs and multiple Big 12 Conference championships. UNC is also a member of the Big 12 Conference in wrestling.
He coached at Binghamton University in upstate New York and with top-level club programs such as the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, a nonprofit in State College, Pennsylvania.
In a news release from the athletic department, Ware said he’s grateful to the board of trustees and athletic director Darren Dunn for their trust in him and in the direction of the wrestling program.
“Northern Colorado is a special place, and I’m excited to keep building a culture that pushes our student-athletes to reach their potential on and off the mat,” Ware said.
Other provisions in the contract are: an annual retention bonus of $27,675 paid from endowment funds; a $25,000 signing bonus subject to repayment if Ware leaves the job within two years; up to three months of university housing and a UNC-provided cellphone; a $5,000 relocation reimbursement; and eligibility for annual incentive compensation up to about $28,000 based on academic, athletic and programmatic performance.
The contract also says it may be extended once by mutual written agreement. If UNC wants to extend the contract beyond June 30, 2030, the university will notify Ware in writing on or before March 1, 2030.
During Friday’s meeting, Dunn praised Ware’s accomplishments at Oklahoma and added Ware is “a great member of the coaching staff and someone to be proud of.”
