It has been a lost year for Chicago Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards to this point, but it doesn’t have to be — and it won’t be if he plays as well as his Week 14 grade indicates.
Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards and defensive tackle Grady Jarrett earned the best initial grades from Pro Football Focus after the team’s Week 14 game to the Green Bay Packers. It was a tough loss for Chicago’s football team, which dug an early hole, mounted a spirited comeback, tied it in the fourth quarter, fell behind again, and fought to come painfully close to being in a position to where it could tie or win the game had things gone differently on the team’s final offensive possession. But if you are looking for silver linings, the matching 90.2 grades from PFF are right there for you.

To be clear, Pro Football Focus grades aren’t the be-all and end-all in player evaluation. But they do provide context, perspective, and a look at the bigger picture. eye-opening to me. But if you are someone who is looking for a silver lining from that game, perhaps you can find it in Edwards putting up such a strong grade in his first game back from an extended absence while dealing with injuries. A hamstring issue and a broken hand had kept Edwards out of action since Week 9 against the Cincinnati Bengals. It was nice to see him back in the lineup. And I find it to be encouraging that he earned such a strong grade from PFF.
T.J. Edwards finished Week 14 with 3 solo tackles (4 total) while playing on 33 defensive snaps. He did not tally anything in the quarterback hits or tackles-for-loss column, but snatching up 3 solo tackles while playing just 62 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. Keep in mind that a healthy version of Edwards, who has been limited to just six games this season, plays on 95-100 percent of the defensive snaps. Getting that bit of perspective helps add some depth to his player grade from Packers Week.

One of the key takeaways from Sunday’s loss is just how much the Bears need a healthy T.J. Edwards down the stretch. It will not be easy to strike the playing time balance for a player who is gutting it out through injuries, but it’s not as if this team isn’t accustomed to drawing up those game plans. After all, we’ve seen it with how the defense is handling the cornerbacks situation. The powers that be at Halas Hall would be wise to build him back gradually, which might be challenging considering his high-level of play, importance to this defense, and the issues behind him on the depth chart.
Even with T.J. Edwards back in the fold, the Bears were still without Tremaine Edmuns. The other starting linebacker on this defense is on injured reserve. In his absence, we have seen an uptick in playing time for D’Marco Jackson and Amen Ogbongbemiga. What we haven’t seen is a ton of snaps for linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II. Between the rookie learning curve and injuries, the player who entered the summer in a position to battle for a starting spot is lost in the weeds right now. Given the depth and injury issues at linebacker, the Bears need a healthy Edwards for as many snaps as they can get.
