Corbin Carroll, still treating hand, puts power on display in dominant series vs. Tigers ...Middle East

PHOENIX — Corbin Carroll’s hand is feeling “way better” than it did when he first returned to games in spring training from hamate surgery, and his power was fully showcased this week in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ sweep of the Detroit Tigers.

In the first inning of Wednesday’s 1-0 win at Chase Field, Carroll took two-time defending American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal deep. He went yard on an 0-2 pitch, a 97 mph heater at the top of the strike zone that Carroll flipped to left-center field.

Carroll became only the sixth left-handed hitter to homer off Skubal in the ace pitcher’s major league career (139 appearances since 2020). Carroll finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk.

In three games since coming home to Chase Field, Carroll accomplished the following:

RBI triple and three-run home run off Justin Verlander on Monday Clutch two-run double during Arizona’s eighth-inning comeback on Tuesday Home run off Skubal on Wednesday

Carroll went 5-for-10 with two home runs, seven RBIs and three walks against Detroit.

“I’ve been happy with my swings the last couple days. I feel like I’ve got some good cues right now that are clicking,” Carroll said postgame Wednesday.

Carroll also delivered a sacrifice fly in the final game at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, so he is on a four-game RBI streak.

After a slow start in the opening series (2-for-11) of the season, Carroll felt that an adjustment with his hands had made the difference.

“Just felt like my hands were getting a little too far away from my body, a little bit more uncontrolled, a little bit more loaded with my hands as opposed to loaded with my body,” Carroll said on Monday. “I thought I did a nice job of adjusting. The last game of L.A. was a little closer to what I wanted.”

He is also finishing his swing with two hands with regularity this season, which he felt might be a product of his build-up this spring. Carroll had surgery to remove a broken hamate bone in his right hand on Feb. 11, returned to game action a month later and started on Opening Day.

“I’ve always swung with two hands in the cage and then get in the game, and it’s a one-handed swing, one-handed finish. I think maybe just with the hand stuff this year, I think it’s just happening,” Carroll said on Monday.

Carroll has not put the surgery completely behind him at this point, even with his discomfort easing and the success he’s had so far. He is only seven weeks removed from the operation and is still getting treatment to maintain the range of motion in his hand.

That involves breaking up scar tissue, he explained.

“There’s like a machine that they use, I think it’s called the Acuscope, but we’ve got a trainer that’s very good at inflicting pain,” Carroll said with a smile.

“I want to be ready to go. I’ve got guys in this locker room that need, want you there. And so it’s my goal to be available,” he added.

There is evidence that it takes time for many players to see their power return to normal after having a hamate bone removed. It would not have been surprising to see that to a certain degree.

On the other hand, manager Torey Lovullo said he is not surprised at all with how Carroll has responded. In a small sample size, Carroll was seventh in the National League with a .762 slugging percentage as of Wednesday afternoon.

"It's a testament to the veteran leaders we have on this team to be able to bounce back that way."
