How Kyle Tucker’s Free Agency Could Impact the Cubs’ Decision at Third Base ...Middle East

The odds that this chain of events actually plays out are extremely long. But it’s something I’ve been thinking about, and considered it fun enough – and at least plausible enough – to share.

We know that Kyle Tucker’s free agency is not likely to touch upon the Chicago Cubs directly, outside of the post-second-round draft pick they’ll add when he signs elsewhere. The Cubs were never going to commit $300+ million to Tucker, and there have been no public indications that his market is so soft that he’ll have to fall back to the kind of deal the Cubs would be willing to offer. So it is.

But that doesn’t mean Tucker’s free agency couldn’t indirectly affect the Cubs, and that’s what I’d been thinking about.

Let’s start with Tucker’s market. Right now, there are a number of speculated suitors who could fit on the basis of (1) they have the money, and (2) Tucker is a great hitter that any willing team could accommodate. That would include teams like the Dodgers, the Mets, and the Yankees. But there’s really only one suitor who has been identified as actually trying to make something happen with Tucker: the Toronto Blue Jays.

Already active on the market and trying to add that additional foot of which they came up just short in the World Series, you hear a whole lot out there about the Blue Jays going hard after a handful of players. One of them is Tucker, who recently visited the Blue Jays’ spring facilities, and who would fit rather well in a ready-made Blue Jays lineup. If he doesn’t want to be THE star on a team, he could slot in with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer the way he did with Yordan Alvarez and Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman on the Astros. And for the Blue Jays, Tucker could replace the bat they might lose in Bo Bichette if he signs elsewhere.

So that’s where this chain starts: Tucker to the Blue Jays.

If that were to happen, then most presume the Blue Jays would cut ties with Bichette. Not for positional reasons, but purely out of probably-maxed budget. Maybe it’s not a guarantee, but this is the presumption out there.

If that were to happen, then Bichette is going to need to find another big-money, big-market club that’s looking to add a bat. Well, it just so happens that there is a club like that out there with plausible openings at shortstop, second base, AND third base, all of which they could use a guy like Bichette. He’s a shortstop for now, but may soon be moving to third or second. Where better to land, then, than a club that has availability and coordinate-ability at all three spots?

I’m talking about the Boston Red Sox, a team that definitely has the funds and the desire to add a big bat like Bichette’s. And it just so happens that The Athletic’s crew attached Bichette to the Red Sox on Friday, as something of a back-up plan should Alex Bregman – a natural third baseman – ultimately sign elsewhere.

To spin that around in the other direction, if Bichette were to sign with the Red Sox, then Bregman would almost certainly be left to sign elsewhere.

Now, maybe the Bo Bichette report there was mostly about creative leverage IN ORDER TO GET Alex Bregman to re-sign. Makes sense to me.

HOWEVA, I’m just saying: if Bichette went to Boston and Bregman left one of his most obvious suitors, maybe things suddenly look a whole lot better for the Cubs, who are known to have serious interest in signing Alex Bregman.

The Cubs are reportedly considering other possibilities at third, at varying times being connected to all of Eugenio Suarez, Munetaka Murakami, and Kazuma Okamoto. And, of course, with Matt Shaw demonstrating his ability at the position this past season, it’s not like the Cubs HAVE TO add at third base for 2026. It’s just that Shaw’s ability to play multiple positions, and his still-developing status, means that the Cubs could easily accommodate an offensive upgrade at third base for 2026. They might not do it, and the position might simply be Shaw’s once again.

Still, you can see the chain plausibly playing out, right? Kyle Tucker signs with the Blue Jays. Bo Bichette pivots and signs with the Red Sox. Alex Bregman pivots and signs with the Cubs. Fun, right?
