Virat Kohli has delivered one of the finest ODI series performances of his career once again, reminding the world that he is still operating at a level most batters can only dream of. The former India captain smashed 302 runs in three innings against South Africa, including two commanding centuries, and finished the series as dominant as anyone.
This was Kohli’s first international series on home soil in 10 months, and he made sure to remind fans and critics why he is still the heartbeat of India’s batting. Playing just only one format, it could be tough for other batters but Kohli made it look like it was 2016 all over again.
With his two tons in Ranchi and Raipur, Kohli now sits on 84 international centuries, and 53 of those have come in ODIs. With his renewed form in the 50-over format and his decision to step away from Tests and T20Is, the discussion has once again soared up whether he can chase down Sachin Tendulkar’s monumental record of 100 international hundreds. Many believe it’s out of reach. But one voice strongly backing him is Sunil Gavaskar.
Gavaskar: ‘Why not? Virat Kohli can do it’
Speaking on JioHotstar, Gavaskar said he sees no reason why Kohli cannot become the second man in history to reach triple-digit tons.
“Why not? Even if he plays for three more years, he needs 16 hundreds from here,” Gavaskar said. “The way he has been batting… he has scored two hundreds in a three-match series. Going forward, even if he scores two more against New Zealand, he will reach 87. So the chances of him getting to 100 are big, very good.“
Gavaskar pointed out that this version of Kohli, aggressive from the start and dominant without being risky, is rare and extremely dangerous for opposition bowlers. He highlighted the unbeaten 65 in Vizag, where Kohli produced a T20-style innings inside an ODI chase, hitting three sixes and six fours without giving a single chance.
“Very rarely have we seen this version of Virat Kohli — the T20 avatar in ODIs. He played his shots from the second ball, and not one of them was reckless,” Gavaskar said.

India are scheduled to play more or less 35 ODIs leading into the 2027 World Cup, giving Kohli not many opportunities to keep climbing toward the record. At 37, he appears to be experiencing another peak rather than decline. After all, he has scored 651 runs in his last 13 ODIs (all in 2025) at an average of 65.10, with three centuries and four fifties in his last 10 innings. He averaged 22 more than the entire Indian batting lineup in total in 2025, scoring almost 20% of the team’s ODI runs.
If Kohli manages to play 10 more matches at the ODI World Cup, he would definitely have a shot at the unprecedented record. Kohli has been one of the biggest fans of Sachin Tendulkar, and how poetic it would be if he reaches the landmark at the ODI World Cup 2027. Even if he doesn’t reach there, it wouldn’t change the fact that Kohli remains one of the best, if not the best one-day batter of all time.
