The Denver Broncos wrapped up Monday’s practice ahead of their Friday preseason opener. Sean Payton returned from his trip to Canton, Ohio and it was back to work for everyone.

Denver Broncos Training Camp Day 11 Recap

Soft tissue injuries have been piling up for the Denver Broncos throughout their first two weeks of training camp, and it’s something that Sean Payton hopes they can get a handle on sooner rather than later.

The weather at camp for the last week and a half has felt hotter and muggier than any of the days we attended last year, but Payton is looking at what might be contributing to the issue.

“I don’t think it’s heat-related as much as… you always try to look at your pre-practice routine, your hydration obviously,” Payton said. After today’s practice, the Broncos had a ‘warm down’ period where they stretched after practice.

The latest player to run into a soft tissue issue was running back J.K. Dobbins, who jogged into the team facility, and trainers followed during the Broncos’ 7-on-7 period. Payton said he thinks Dobbins will be fine, and that they were being smart with what popped up.

Wide receiver Michael Bandy also jogged into the team facility and did not return during practice.

In terms of good news on the injury side, wide receiver Marvin Mims, tight end Nate Adkins, center Luke Wattenberg, and inside linebacker Jordan Turner returned in full pads, but ultimately transitioned over onto the team’s side field to do more rehab work.

Cornerback Patrick Surtain II and safety Devon Key also participated on the side field in full pads today.

Bo Nix, Broncos passing offense sharp on Monday

Bo Nix has been throwing the football with a lot of confidence so far throughout training camp, and Monday’s practice saw more of that.

Starting off in 7-on-7, Nix attempted to go to Courtland Sutton on the first play downfield, but Jahdae Barron would have been called for pass interference. On the next play, Nix threw a dot across the middle of the field to Lil’Jordan Humphrey for a big gain. He then connected with Troy Franklin on a quick pass and catch, with Franklin getting additional yards after the catch. To conclude 7-on-7, Nix hit training camp standout Pat Bryant for a big gain across the middle with Riley Moss in coverage.

The Broncos had one team period where the emphasis was run game only, and RJ Harvey had several nice runs, filling in for J.K. Dobbins, who exited practice during 7-on-7.

Denver’s other team periods were good on good. Nix’s first passing attempt to Franklin fell incomplete, but he then rattled off three straight downfield completions. He connected with Bryant for a first down, with RJ Harvey picking up a blitz and giving him extra time.

Sutton then came up with a nice backshoulder catch while working against Kris Abrams-Draine, who saw plenty of run on Monday with Patrick Surtain II working on the side field. While that play was big, the best play of the day came on the very next snap.

Nix connected with Troy Franklin 20+ yards across the middle of the field, throwing a dart into a window right over Ja’Quan McMillian and in front of the safety.

Other Monday camp standouts

Rookie offensive lineman Kage Casey has looked impressive throughout the first week and a half of camp. He’s got great footwork, he’s strong, and that was on display in pass rush one-on-ones. Casey rarely appears to get moved by a defender, and his footwork allows him to readjust if he feels he’s losing leverage.

Outside linebacker Jonah Elliss continues to look impressive off the edge, coming up big on two plays that would have resulted in sacks in a real game scenario.

Running back Jaleel McLaughlin and RJ Harvey both had strong runs on the day, and rookie Jonah Coleman continues to make some eye-popping plays in team.

The Broncos will have two more practices this week, one more best-on-best on Tuesday, then Wednesday’s practice will be more of a game preparation vibe ahead of their preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Wednesday’s practice will be closed to the general public.
