Damascus, Dec. 6 (SANA) The Syrian Paragliding Club is preparing to carry out the world’s highest “Byron” jump at Umayyad Square in Damascus, with the participation of pilots who arrived in Syria on Friday from various countries to join the Liberation Anniversary celebrations.
The club’s director, Tarek Saada, told SANA that the jump will be performed from three helicopters, in the colours of the Syrian flag, and will be submitted for registration in the Guinness World Records upon its success.
Saada noted that the event will be organised by the Syrian Paragliding Club under the sponsorship of the Syrian Ministry of Sports and Youth.
He explained that the “Byron” is an air tube measuring seven metres in length and 1.5 metres in diameter, through which the parachutist jumps from the aircraft. The jumper holds on to it from an altitude of 13,000 feet down to 5,000 feet, before releasing it to open the parachute.
90 paragliding pilots arrived on Friday evening through Damascus International Airport to take part in Syria’s Liberation Anniversary celebrations. They are part of a total of 130 pilots from 35 countries worldwide who will join the festivities, with 16 more expected to arrive tomorrow and 24 having already entered via land crossings.
