As this was a mixed event, his swim is not eligible for National, European or World Records.
He took nearly a tenth off his previous best of 22.91, set just eight weeks ago at the World Cup stop in Carmel, and this marks his second swim under the 23-second barrier. He has set Estonian Records in the 50 free (20.77), 50 back (*22.83 unofficial*, 22.91), 100 back (49.92) and 100 IM (52.20) this fall.
He is creeping up the all-time rankings, and would now stand at #28. His previous best placed him 37th, which was a jump of nearly 20 places on his former time of 23.06.
He stays at #6 in the world this season, with only one of the swimmers ahead of him in attendance at these championships, Francesco Lazzari of Italy. Eight of the top ten in the world this season are European swimmers.

Sander Sorensen, who recently announced his commitment to Stanford for next fall, hacked over two seconds off the Norwegian record to claim the #3 seed in tonight’s semi-finals with a swim of 1:41.87.
His previous record stood at 1:44.17, set this October at the Asker Grand Prix. Before then, the standard had belonged to the now-retired Tomoe Hvas, who set the record of 1:44.18 leading off Norway’s 4×200 free relay at the short course world championships in December 2021.
Sorensen broke out at the Singapore World Championships this summer, setting national records in the 100 free (48.65) and 200 free (1:45.78). He placed 9th in the semi-finals of the latter, missing out on a finals berth by just 0.18 seconds. That hacked over a second and a half from his previous best of 1:47.47, set at European Juniors where he took bronze.
Sorensen is now just over a second from Matt Sates‘ World Junior Record of 1:40.65. While that may be out of reach, he likely has two further swims here to establish himself as one of the top juniors in history in the 200 free.
One heat prior to Sorensen’s swim, Evan Bailey had clipped the Irish record by 0.06 seconds in a time of 1:42.68, giving him a share of both the long course and short course records in the event.
The previous mark had been held by none other than Jack McMillan, the 400 free champion here in Lublin and the top seed out of the heats in this event.
McMillan now swims for Great Britain, and this was the second time Bailey has at least matched his erstwhile colleague. He had matched McMillan’s standard of 1:46.67 in the long course event in the heats at this summer’s long course World Championships. He placed 16th in the semi-finals.
