The Blackhawks weren’t good last night. After the game, head coach Jeff Blashill said he thought there are maybe a few decent minutes early in the first period, but too many guys had their “C game.” André Burakovsky was not a happy camper when he spoke to the media after the game. He admitted he didn’t feel great in his first game back from injury, but didn’t want to line up any excuses for a mediocre effort.
Andre Burakovsky: “Today, we just made it hard for ourselves. I think Nashville is a team that we should and can beat. We just mentally didn’t want it enough today, I guess.”
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) November 29, 2025Blashill said it’s an “every night league.” The Nashville Predators might have come in with a terrible record, but that doesn’t change the resumes of the guys they put in their lineup. And it doesn’t change their level of desperation. Clearly the Predators wanted to win the game last night more than the Blackhawks. And that’s what happened.
Now, the Blackhawks ride a five-game losing streak into a Sunday afternoon game against Joel Quenneville’s Anaheim Ducks — who are in first place in the Pacific Division.
Earlier this week, Columbus GM Don Waddell talked to David Pagnotta at The Fourth Period about extension talks with Adam Fantilli and Boone Jenner. Fantilli, of course, was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft — two spots after Connor Bedard. Waddell told Pagnotta all involved parties have agreed to wait until after the Olympics to get to work on an extension. I’m inserting this note here because the topic of the extension for Bedard came up this week. The writers at NHL.com placed their quarter-season votes for the Hart Trophy and Bedard is… the runner-up right now!Who do you think will win the Hart Memorial Trophy this year? — Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) November 26, 2025 Terrific read here from Ben Pope this week on Nick Lardis‘ move from junior to the pro ranks.“We want, when he does get his opportunity, for him to help the Blackhawks,” IceHogs coach Jared Nightingale told Pope. “I know their staff [values] play away from the puck, the compete [level and] the little defending habits of the game. Because a guy like him, I’m not going to teach him the offensive side — he’s talented in that area. It’s good that he’s right where he should be.”
Blackhawks prospect Nick Lardis' prolific scoring hasn't been stunted by the OHL-to-AHL leap."You can’t overlook that it is rare to have players who jump and still have that impact."But Lardis would likely benefit from a full AHL season. Here's why: t.co/m3DtwIbeMC
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) November 26, 2025 Speaking of Lardis… Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff shared his final projections for the USA roster at the upcoming World Junior Championship. He has Blackhawks prospect AJ Spellacy on the wing on the fourth line. Ellis also shares his final projections for Canada’s roster at the World Junior Championship. He has Blackhawks prospect Marek Vanacker as the 13th forward. Sacha Boisvert was in the “also considered” section; he was originally projected as a potential top-six forward, but a tough season (including injuries) at BU appears to have his stock down with Canada. No mention of John Mustard, who has been great at Providence and has been brought up elsewhere. Scott Wheeler at The Athletic wrote about the winners and losers from the CHL USA Prospects Challenge this week. A couple individual comments that stood out:There are plenty of scouts who’ve been critical of [Gavin] McKenna’s play this year, but for all of the chatter about his spot at No. 1, there weren’t any challengers in Calgary and Lethbridge this week.
AndI thought captain Caleb Malhotra was Canada’s best player (particularly in the second game, where he was excellent) … Malhotra played with poise, held onto pucks and found his way out of trouble when many of his teammates didn’t on this stage, which I think is usually telling at these events. His line with Adam Novotny and Mathis Preston, which was put together for the third period of Game 1, was the only one that created good looks for long stretches of both games.

— Talkin’ Hawkey (@TalkinHawkey) November 29, 2025 An interesting quote this week from Minnesota Wild and USA Hockey GM Bill Guerin on the what they’re looking for in putting together their final roster for the Winter Olympics:"No matter what their offensive gifts are, if you can’t check, it’s probably not the tournament for you," _ Bill Guerin. My chat with the Team USA GM as the Olympic roster decisions enter the final month t.co/B2sU7nJdMr
— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) November 26, 2025 The Montreal Canadiens signed defenseman Mike Matheson to a really nice, team-friendly five-year extension that has a $6M AAV. The Calgary Flames locked up their entire front office for a couple more years.Pres Don Maloney, and AGMs Dave Nonis and Brad Pascall also extended to 2-year deals. All deals were agreed to before the season started. t.co/R6nkMmDtTz
