ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A Yellow Alert remains up into Friday for local lake effect snow and gusty winds. The winds will be easing slowly through the day, so they will become less problematic, but there will be areas of blowing snow where the lake effect is falling. Speaking of which, the main snow event so far has been off of Lake Erie, including the Southern Tier. That is changing Thursday night. A wind shift will push the band of snow over Lake Ontario south, and closer to the Rochester area. The snow band is expected to set up over northern Monroe and especially Wayne County through the day Friday. This is where the heaviest snowfall will accumulate. In general, most of our area will just need a snow brush. But if you’re north of Route 104, and especially Wayne County, there’s a better chance you’ll be doing some shoveling. Friday is a busy travel day, so we’ll be watching the Thruway corridor east of Rochester toward Syracuse, and also the western Southern Tier toward Jamestown and Erie, PA for some travel impacts.
The weather quiets down very nicely on Saturday, so any travel plans then won’t be impacted by weather. Some early show showers will end, and we’ll see some limited sun returning. Sunday will see another fast moving storm moving through, but impacts look fairly minor. Some light snow and snow showers will be around in the morning. Temperatures will warm just enough to see some wet snow mixed with rain showers by afternoon. Any accumulation looks limited to an inch or less.
Some lake flakes may fly on Monday, but we’ll be watching another larger storm system on Tuesday. The track of it at this point is far enough south that we’d avoid most accumulating snow, but a slight shift northward would mean some shoveling for parts of our area. So, we’ll be watching the first part of next week for any changes in that track.
