A person has died and another was critically injured when a freight train struck a vehicle Wednesday night.
According to a spokesperson for CSX Rail, a freight train struck the vehicle near Broadway Street in suburban Blue Island at approximately 6:11 p.m. Wednesday.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office reported that one person in the vehicle died at the scene, while another was rushed to an area hospital, where they were listed in critical condition.
There were no injuries to the train crew, according to a CSX spokesperson.
“CSX extends its deepest sympathies to everyone impacted by this tragic incident and will continue to support local law enforcement as they complete the investigation,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
