The Government is scrapping the promise to protect all workers against unfair dismissal from the first day in a new job, in a major U-turn on Labour’s employment rights pledges.
Following a sustained business backlash, the right will now kick in after six months – less than the two years which is the current threshold.
Other so-called “day one” rights are expected to stay in place under the legislation, which ministers are aiming to get on to the statute book by Christmas.
Unions have previously resisted calls to water down the Employment Rights Bill and insisted that it must be delivered in full.
The bill, which was seen as the brainchild of Angela Rayner before she was forced to resign from the Government, is popular with the Labour left but businesses claim it will harm economic growth.
