Union Rescue Mission brought Thanksgiving to Skid Row for its residents and unhoused neighbors, cooking four tons of turkey and serving 1,500 guests. Joined by the cast of “The Bold and the Beautiful,” and church and community volunteers, Union Rescue Mission served a “dignified sit-down dining experience.”

Richard Newcomb, Union Rescue Mission vice president of philanthropy, said, “On average, 1,000 people stay in a URM facility each night, including hundreds of parents and children, and many seniors who would otherwise be alone during the holidays. The reality is that most of our guests don’t have a home to go to for Thanksgiving, and that takes a real emotional toll. That’s why we see this celebration as a responsibility, a way to make sure men, women, and children in crisis feel seen, valued, and remembered during a time that can be especially difficult.”
Union Rescue Mission CEO Mark Hood said, “Many people are blessed to enter the holidays with much to be thankful for, and at Union Rescue Mission we want the people we serve to feel that same sense of gratitude and belonging. Thanksgiving can be an especially vulnerable time for those experiencing homelessness or separated from loved ones, which is why our annual turkey ‘FRY DAY’ and Thanksgiving celebration is so meaningful. Our dining room becomes a beautiful 5-star venue where we literally roll out the red carpet, so every guest feels valued, special, and like family—welcomed with dignity and exceptional care.”
