Jared Padalecki is starring in a new Netflix Christmas movie alongside Gossip Girl alum Leighton Meester, and it turns out fans have his wife, Genevieve Padalecki, to thank for helping make it happen.
The Gilmore Girls and Supernatural star will appear in Guarding Stars, a holiday romantic comedy based on Katherine Center’s 2022 novel The Bodyguard. But according to Genevieve, the project began with a book club discovery.
In a Nov. 5 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Genevieve revealed that she was reading Center’s novel for her book club when she immediately thought of her husband for the leading role.
“Oh my God, my husband would be so good at this,” she recalled thinking.
She passed the book along to Jared, and three years later, the couple found themselves producing the Netflix adaptation through their company, Living in the Asterisk.
Genevieve explained that the character’s humor reminded her of Jared, whom she described as “the funniest human being I’ve ever met in my life.”
“I always get into trouble because I volunteer him for everything, because in my eyes, he can do no wrong,” she told the outlet.
She added that Jared doesn’t get enough opportunities to show off his comedic side, making the romantic comedy a particularly appealing project.

The actor told Entertainment Weekly that although he’s recognizable from his television roles, he’s still able to maintain a relatively private life. Playing someone who couldn’t escape the attention that comes with fame was a different experience.
“I didn’t like that feeling,” he said, adding that he didn’t think his character enjoyed it either.
The Padaleckis also worked closely with Center to bring her novel to the screen, although Jared acknowledged that several changes were necessary for the adaptation.
According to the actor, Center encouraged the filmmakers to think of the movie as an expansion of the world she created rather than a scene-for-scene recreation of the book.
The cast also includes Andie MacDowell, Noah LaLonde, Toby Sandeman, Shaun Johnston, Phil Brooks and country singer Walker Hayes, who makes his acting debut.
And while the movie brings together two familiar faces from beloved television series—Padalecki played Dean Forester on Gilmore Girls, while Meester portrayed Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl—Genevieve’s involvement adds another unexpected connection to the project.
What began as a book club read ultimately became a Christmas movie starring her husband.
Guarding Stars premieres Nov. 18 on Netflix.
