A New International Posting Possibility, This Time Jo-Hsi Hsu From Taiwan ...Middle East

Although baseball is played at a high level in Taiwan (the league is the Chinese Professional Baseball League, and you may recognize the term “Chinese Taipei,” used in international competitions due to the One China principle, because Taiwan’s official name is the Republic of China (ope, this parenthetical really got going)), we don’t often see players making the leap from the CPBL straight to MLB. Instead, where there is player movement, it’s more likely to occur among the Asian countries, or, occasionally, with players from the Americas going over to play in Taiwan.

The two active stateside players from Taiwan, Kai-Wei Teng (Giants) and Tsung-Che Cheng (Pirates), are both prospects who were signed out of International Free Agency. Cubs fans may remember Jen-Ho Tseng, who was similarly signed internationally as a prospect. Indeed, the only already-established professional Taiwanese player I can remember coming over to MLB was lefty Wei-Yin Chen, but he’d actually first gone to play in Japan in the NPB.

I absolutely could be forgetting someone, but you get the point: an established professional player coming straight over from the CPBL to MLB would be extremely rare, and, thus, kinda cool.

This offseason, it’s a possibility:

Hsu Jo-Hsi (徐若熙), who is being posted this offseason, spoke to the media:? Already visited Japan and had dinner with SoftBank Hawks chairman Oh Sadaharu.? Interested in visiting MLB facilities in USA.? NPB or MLB? His wife & kid will be a major factor in the decision. pic.twitter.com/Jl9UPAmmBm

Jo-Hsi Hsu, 25, has been a dominant starter in Taiwan the last few seasons, and now he and his club want to see if there is interest out there in another league. An international report indicates that he’s already received a three-year offer worth over $6 million from the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, but it’s not yet clear whether there will be similar interest from any MLB teams.

It’s also not entirely clear how well his game would translate to the United States – it’s possible he would pitch in relief, given the shorter seasons in Taiwan – but you have to believe there’s a club that would be willing to take a relatively modest risk if it meant a chance at a guy who could become the only current big-name Taiwanese player in MLB. Apparently he can sling it in the upper-90s, so obviously there’s performance upside, too (which is the most important thing).
