De Groot shaved 0.06 seconds off his previous best, set at Dutch Trials at the start of July, and was just under a tenth faster than the 26.71 he clocked in the semi-finals of the World Championships last year.
He eventually placed 7th in Singapore, swimming a tenth of a second slower in the final with a 26.81. De Groot had looked strong through the first two rounds though, with a heats swim of 26.85 and a semi-finals swim of 26.71.
He now has five sub-27 seconds swims this season, more than in his entire career before the start of the year. He is coming off a successful season spent at Florida in the NCAA, where he placed 4th at the NCAA Championships in March. He now ranks 18th all-time in the 50 breast, moving up four places.
Stepan Babenko was one of two Ukrainian swimmers in this final, having broken 27 seconds for the first time in the semi-finals yesterday. He edged out Volodymyr Lisovets here by 0.06 seconds, having been beaten by the LSU swimmer by 0.08 seconds in the semi-finals.
Lisovets had taken down Babenko’s mark of 27.08 from the heats, which had broken Oleh Lisohor’s former record of 27.18, which had stood since the 2002 European Championships and was older than both of the swimmers now faster than it.
Lisovets had tied that record with a 27.18 at the 2024 German Championships, with Babenko clocking a 27.26 at the 2025 Ukrainian Championships to also near the mark. They have dropped four tenths of a second and half a second this week, respectively.
Babenko and Lisovets now rank 14th and 18th, respectively, in the world this season. De Groot moves up to 7th with his drop today.
