A contemporary craftsman home on the shore of Pasadena’s historic Johnston Lake is on the market for $6.8 million.
Nestled within the small gated Brookmere community, this single-story residence was built on over a half-acre lot in 2006. It spans 4,539 square feet and includes a main house with four bedrooms and five bathrooms, along with a separate guest studio with one bathroom.
The owners, a couple in their late 60s, bought the property in August 1997 for $700,000, records show.
Originally a 1960s ranch style, they collaborated with local architect Doug Ewing to design a new home inspired by early 20th-century Arts and Crafts style, while incorporating modern conveniences.
Inside, the home boasts a great room with an 18-foot beamed ceiling and a massive natural stone fireplace. It flows into the formal dining room.
The large gourmet kitchen includes a breakfast bar, a spacious walk-in pantry and plenty of cabinet space.
In the primary suite, there’s a spa bathroom, a large walk-in closet and a private patio.
The office, anchored by a fireplace, enhances the main living space.
Outdoors, the property includes multiple terraces, outdoor rooms and a private 30-foot dock extending from the 80-foot waterfront. The small, three-acre lake is visible through the main home’s large south-facing windows and double French doors.
Ewing preserved the mature California native oaks and sycamores surrounding the property, which complement the bucolic lake setting.
The longtime owners have rented their home for film and TV productions, such as the 2014 sci-fi series “Extant” with Halle Berry and the 2015 dark comedy “A Deadly Adoption” starring Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig. They also hosted home and garden tourgoers.
Nancy Valentine, the listing broker, represents the property, one of just 18 homes in the Brookmere community surrounding Johnston Lake.
Historically, Johnston Lake began as a natural spring-fed pond in the late 19th century by former Los Angeles Mayor Prudent Beaudry to supply water for his San Rafael Winery.
In 1876, Beaudry dammed San Rafael Creek for this purpose. The lake later got its name from Alexander and Frances Campbell-Johnston, a British couple who bought the land for a ranching operation in 1883.
The lake once gained popularity as a public destination for picnics, fishing and boating. When residents of the lakeside community formed the Brookmere Homeowners Association, they privatized the lake. Today, only residents have access for catch-and-release fishing, rowing and waterfront activities.
